A Guide On Laser Cutting
Traditional cutting processes like plasma and oxy-fuel cutting have become outdated and have been replaced by the latest Laser Cutting Tool in recent times. As compared to the traditional methods, the new laser cutting technique cuts all sorts of industrial products, ranging from plastic to metals with maximum precision, uniformity, speed and minimum wastage of material. This has made laser cutting machines a need of almost every industry today. There are certain parameters that needs to be taken into due consideration for effective output.
Parameters For Laser Cutting:
- Laser Power
It is important to adjust the laser power as per the type and thickness of the material to be cut. Small work-pieces require less laser power to be cut.
- Pulse Frequency
Pulse frequency to be used depends on the work-piece that needs to be cut. Pulse frequency must be reduced for small contours and for piercing at ramp mode.
- Cutting Gas
The kind of cutting gas to be used is also an important consideration. For example, while cutting wood, oxygen should not be used because wood is a combustible material.
- Gas Pressure
Gas pressure must also be set well. Fluid slag remains attached to the base material if the gas pressure is too low. Also, if gas pressure is extremely high, then lower edges of the material are either burnt-off or become unstable.
- Nozzle Size
Choosing the right nozzle is equally important. Deformed nozzle can cause cutting errors. For example, the cut edge won’t be cleanly cut and slag shall adhere to the lower edge of kerf if the nozzle is too small.
- Nozzle Distance
Nozzle distance greatly impacts the quality of the cutting. Nozzle distance should be such a way that it does not touch the work-piece, yet the gap between the nozzle and material surface is minimal.
- Focusing Optics
The laser beam is focused onto a single spot through the nozzle by focusing optics. For this, focusing lens must be properly installed. A dirty lens heats up excessively and deforms due to excessive absorption of laser radiation.
- Focus Position
Accurate positioning of focal point is important for the best cutting output. Depending on the kind of cut that is required, the laser beam is adjusted accordingly.
