New York 13th Congressional District Gets Ready For The Primaries

New York 13th Congressional District is getting ready for the primaries; the prelude to the November 2016 general elections. The primary in the district has been scheduled to be held on June 28th this year and there is hardly a little over three months left now. The district is bracing to participate in the primaries and choosing their favored candidate for the elections through the primaries.

Candidates in the Field

Several notable candidates are in the field contesting the primaries. These include Keith Wright Running For Congress, Adam Powell, Suzan Cook,, Mike Gallagher, Adriano Espalliat, Bill Perkins among others. The final scenario would be on November 8th only after the candidates for both the Democratic as well as Republican parties are selected in the primaries to be held on June 28th in the New York 13th Congressional District. That is why primaries are extremely important in the United States electoral systems and it gives the candidates the ticket to the next higher levels for contesting in the general elections.

Exit of the Legend

One of the important aspects of the primaries this year in the 13th Congressional district is that the incumbent Charles Rangel is not contesting the elections this year. This has given greater hopes to the stalwarts like Clyde Williams Congress 2016, and Sen Adriano Espilllat. But popular choice is often extremely volatile and it is not known whether they would opt for Williams or Keith Wright, Adam Clayton Powel, or Bill Parkins and even newcomers like Mike Gallagher for getting their ways into the congress. Till the last elections it was Charles Rangel who has been there for decades now. His exit would certainly change the feature of the elections to be held in the 13th Congressional Districts.

Strictly Closed Primary

13th Congressional district in New York is one of the constituencies where strictly closed primary system of election is followed. In fact New York is one of the 12 states in United States that uses strictly closed primary processes. The selection of the candidates in either of the parties is limited to registered members in the party. Charles Rangel was the person who was at the helm of the affairs from 1970 through 2012 but he announced towards the end of 2014 that he is not going to contest the 2016 elections. This has opened up the field for other contestants including Keith Wright running for Congress and also others like Gallagher, Espillat and Clyde Williams Congress 2016 and each of them are aspiring for winning the contest in the primaries.

Constitution of the Congress

New York 13tth congressional district is situated towards the south eastern portion of the state and it includes part of the New York City as well. According to the existing procedures the candidates can be added prior to the dateline for signature filing but not after that. That part is going to be over in April this year.
