Past And Present Trends In New York 13th Congressional District Elections
Time for the 2016 elections for the New York 13th congressional district is approaching fast. The primaries shall be held on 28th June and the main elections will be held on 14th November 2016. The signature filing deadlines have also been declared and the latest date for the same is April 2016. There are some notable candidates as well as some potential candidates in the field crossing swords for the coveted position. For instance; there is Bill Perkins New York and there is also Mike Gallagher who is fresher in comparison.
The Incumbent Running Feature
One of the unique features of the Congressional elections in United States is that the incumbents are considered to be running until they officially announce withdrawal of their names. The current incumbent in the 13th NY congressional district is Charles Rangel Congressman. However he has announced his retirement in 2016 and the stage is set for a new incumbent to hold the post. There are some declared candidates and some potential candidates and the final list will come up only when the date for signature is over.
Declared Candidates for the Primaries
New York City and so also its 13th Congressional district has the tradition of supporting democratic candidates though at times there have been instances of supporting republican candidates. But those cases were exceptions rather than common features. Presently no candidate from the Republican party have been declared as contesting the elections. However there are several declared candidates from the Democratic Party. Potential Candidates for Primaries,
David Paterson the former Governor of New York, Inez E. Dickens, City Council Member, Michael A Warlord Jr Reverend, and Melissa Mark Viveriot, the City Counselor are the potential candidate for the primaries to be held on June 28th. However it is yet to be known whether any of them would finally be there or withdraw from the contest.
The Significant Announcement
In the past it was Charles Rangel the Congressman all the way. He was there in 1971 and he was there in 2014. However on the date of his re-election in 2014, Rangel declared that he would be retiring in 2016. That means the 114th congress was his last term as one of the U.S representatives. "As I cast my final vote as a candidate on the ballot, I was reminded of why I first ran for Congress 43 years ago", Rangel said.
Opportunities for Others
However the retirement announcement opened up opportunities for others that included Adriano Espaillat for Congress as well as Bill Perkins for Congress as primary candidates. There are also others that include Mike Gallagher who has a unique manifesto to offer the citizens of the 13th NY district in United States.
Incumbent Charles Rangel defeated Daniel Vila Rivera getting a massive 74.5& vote in the general elections held on November 4th 2014. But the 2016 are likely to be closer contest after his exit from the scenario.
