It may come as a total surprise for burger aficionados that the McVeggie burger is available only in India, and a few other selected nations. For reasons unknown, the company seems to have no intention of bowing to the increasing demand for the really tasty snack by discerning customers of the United States. As of now, Americans have to manage with beans or mushrooms if they want a vegetarian option. Apparently, India with its huge population of vegetarians is too meaty a market for the company to ignore and they had to conjure up a really special veggie burger to cater to local demand.

A Really Popular Item

Not unsurprisingly, the McVeggie is a really hot-seller in the Indian market with a large vegetarian population that is increasingly seeking variety when dining out. The option of a totally vegetarian burger is also extremely enticing to mothers who usually find their kids completely averse to consuming vegetables in any form. Since it may not be always practical to dine out very regularly, here’s a recipe that will have the kids clamoring for more. For sure, the ingredients may not be the same as that used by the McDonald’s, but the taste would be pretty close enough to keep kids and most adults too, happy.

Simple Ingredients That Deliver a Knockout Taste

You need to gather the following ingredients to prepare two burgers. For the assembly job, the list comprises 2 burger buns with sesame sprinkled on the top, lettuce leaves, tomato slices, onion slices, cheese slices, cheese spread, mustard sauce, butter, and mayonnaise. For making the patties, you need a couple of boiled potatoes, boiled green peas, breadcrumbs, corn flour, in the absence of which, ordinary flour will suffice, paprika or chili powder, cumin powder, a little vegetable oil, and salt and pepper for seasoning.

Instructions

To make the patties, you need to mash thoroughly the boiled potatoes and then add the boiled green peas to it. The mixture needs then to be seasoned with salt, pepper, cumin powder and red chili powder according to taste. To the mix, add a tablespoon of corn flour or ordinary flour and two tablespoons of breadcrumbs. Mix all the ingredients really well and make patties of the same size as that of the buns. If the patties are too moist, and cannot be formed well, feel free to add more flour to stiffen them up. Ideally, the patties should be around a half-an inch thick so that not only do they cook easily, but eating does not present a problem.

Put some oil into a pan, heat it and fry the crumbed patties on both the sides till the patties turn golden brown and the other layer becomes crisp. You need to experiment a little with the crumbing process to get the quantity exactly right. If you are strictly vegetarian, you can leave out the egg and substitute it with a flour wash that will ensure an even breadcrumb coating on the patties.

Have Fun with the Bun

Halve the sesame buns, smear some butter on them and toast them in a pan. Apply some cheese spread and a slice of cheese and heat it up again in the pan so that the cheese starts melting. On the other half of the bun, apply some butter, crisp it slightly in the pan, and apply the mayo and the mustard sauce. Take the buns off the heat and place a patty on the lower bun right on top of the melted cheese layer, and top it off with slices of onions and tomatoes. Stack the top half of the bun and serve with freshly made French fries.
