All About Tube Bending

Author: Praful Sardhra

Tube Bending comprises of various metal forming processes meant for shaping pipes or tubes. It is the most efficient and the easiest solution for designing task. In most metal tubing manufacturing industries, it is the frequently used method of fabrication. More often than not Bended Tubes are preferred instead of designs with mechanical or welded connections due to many benefits that the Bended Tubes have. Welded joints require the removal and prevention of heat tint in straight tube and elbows. On the contrary, Tube Bending avoids the fabrication steps like mechanical and chemical removal of the heat tint. Also, Bent Tubes offer an even and continuous surface.

There are several methods of bending pipes and tubes or extruding shapes. Economic productivity of Bending is dependent on both the tooling techniques and selection of the right method. With the help of right equipment and tooling, the operator can minimize the degree of skill and expertise required. There are two principles for bending. First, the material on the inside of the bend must be compressed. And second, there should be a stretch in the material on the outside of neutral axis. These two principals apply to the three primary methods which are compression bending, rotary bending and press bending. Given below is a brief description of the methods of Tube Bending:

Methods Of Bending Pipes

  • Compression Bending – The ‘wipe shoe’ or roller is brought in contact with the work piece clamped to a bend die. The rotation of wipe shoe around the static bend die bends the work piece in compliance with the bend die radius.
  • Press Bending – The ram die with desired radius fitted to the press arm forces the tubing down against the conflicting two wing dies. The wing dies pivot up with resisting pressure forcing the tube to bend around the arm.
  • Crush Bending – In order to bend pipe or tubing, the ram crushes the inner wall. Some Wing dies can also produce double crush on the outside bend.
  • Rotary Bending – It is the most precise and versatile bending methods to produce high quality bends. With the help of clamp die, work piece is locked to the bend die. With the rotating of bend, die advances to the tube. This results in the thinning of tube wall and reduction of tube radius.
