Calgary Car Dealers Separate Fact from Fiction Oil Changes

Author: Webmaster Jacky

Oil changes are the single most important aspect of automotive maintenance. Any mechanic that works for any of the car dealers in Calgary will tell you that if you are going to do only one thing for your vehicle, you should get its oil changed. There are a number of myths, though, about oil changes, and drivers use some of these to delay having their vehicle’s oil changed. Below, we separate fact from fiction, dispelling some of the most common myths about oil changes and setting the record straight.

Fiction: Oil should be changed every 5,000 km.

All Calgary car dealers will place a sticker on a car’s window when they complete an oil change. This sticker reminds you when the next oil change is due. Generally, these stickers place the due date for your next oil change at about 5,000 km. These are a good guideline. Some specific automobile manufactures, though, specify different intervals for oil changes. If your owner’s manual states a different interval, it is fine to follow that.

Fact: You should first consult your owner’s manual, then your mechanic about how often you should come in for an oil change.

Fiction: All Calgary car dealers do an equally good job on oil changes.

If you were to survey the car dealers in Calgary, you would find a wide range in what an oil change entails. Some aim to have an oil change done in less than 10 minutes, which is not enough time to inspect every item that should be looked at during an oil change. The better Calgary car dealers will check the brakes, tires, lights and fluids of a car when changing its oil. It usually is worth waiting a few minutes for these checks to be completed, as they could save you from a larger repair down the road.

Fact: The most reputable Calgary car dealers check many maintenance items during an oil change.

Fiction: Dark oil needs changing.

New oil is mostly clear, although slightly coloured. It becomes dark within just a couple days of being in a car, though. Dark oil may need to be changed, but a dark color does not automatically mean that the oil needs changing. It simply indicates that the oil is doing its job and removing particles from the engine.

Fact: The distance driven, not the colour of the oil, determines when it is time for an oil change.
