Washington Heights Congressman And Other Candidates In The Offing As Primary Campaigns Intensify

Author: Mike Gallagher

Democratic primaries in 2016 are unique due to two basic reasons. First of it is that the reigning President Barrack Obama is not eligible for re-election because under the provisions laid down in 22nd amendment according to which no President is eligible to file nomination for the third time. Obama has already acted as President of United States for two terms since the year 2008 and is not eligible to file nomination this time.

Identical Scenario in 13th NY District

In a lower scale the scenario is identical in respect of the primaries for the 13th NY district where the reigning congressman Charles Rangel has stepped down from the 2016 contests. Thus there would be Robert Rodriguez Charles Rangel contest this time. on the other hand it has ushered new dawn of hopes for candidates like Clyde Williams Congressman. As the date for the primaries to be held on the 24th June comes nearer the campaigning gets more and more intensified.

Democratic Tilt But Not Hardcore

While the 13th NY district has always favored the Democratic Party candidates there has also been instances when they deviated and favored the opposition Republican Party members. While the rural areas have some Republican supporters the number is not very significant. But the fact that still at times the Republican candidates have found favor shows that the electors are more concerned about issues and quality of candidates and not about their party affiliations.

Intense Campaigning

To take over the reign of the Washington Heights Congressman the campaign is getting more and more intense. As there is cross endorsement provisions in New York there are a host of political parties and candidates in the fray. They include Adriano Espilat who lost narrowly in the 2012 primaries, Adam Clayton Powel, Keith Wright, Bill Perkins, Martin Chicon, Joan Johnson Crook, Mike Gallagher, and above all; Clyde Williams Congressman in the field of contest. All of them are in the quest to become the Washington Heights Congressman this time.

Late Entrant and New Entrant

One of the renowned candidates for the seat vacated by Charles Rangel announced his intention to contest quite late, around October-November last year. He was the State Senator Adriano Espillat. In his illustrious career he has been championing the issues like lack of adequate economic opportunities. He claims that the 13th NY district needs a strong voice in order to put forth the claims of the people residing there. Another late entrant was Guillermo Linares who was the Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs in the past. He is a long time rival of Espillat and having consistent political feud with him. As new entrant in the contest is Mike Gallagher but the issues raised by him are not alien to the electorate and many of them are burning issues at present.

As the days pass by the candidates intensify their election campaigns. The only thing that some electors might miss is the traditional Robert Rodriguez Charles Rangel competition. But in the world everything changes and this is one such change though for the present seem monumental with 45 years reign of Charles Rangel is poised for an end.
