Debra Oselett is an experienced practice administrator having worked on the job since 2008. She was born in Detroit, Michigan but grew up in Madison Heights a suburb of Detroit. She graduated from Bishop Foley High School in 1975 and took accounting classes at Oakland Community College before getting into the accounting and management sector. Debra Oselett founded an accounting company that set up businesses from manual accounting to computer accounting.

In the last few years, the health care industry has undergone several changes, not just in the area of technology, but also with the overall changes in the health care system in the United States. These changes bring about new and unprecedented challenges for practice administrators.

Changes in the Health Care Reform

The Supreme Court’s decision to go forward with the Affordable Care Act in June 2012 was aimed at enhancing the quality of health in the country. The key factors of the reform included expanding coverage, lowering costs, and holding insurance companies accountable. These factors changed how practice administrators operate in their workplace. Due to the changes in the health care reform in the country, patients have much more choice when seeking health care providers. To go with the changes, practice administrators will have to find more ways of making the practice successful, especially now that patients have access to more medical practitioners.

The Need to Specialize

In the last few years, there has been an increase in the number of specialty medical facilities in the country, and these specialty hospitals provide the opportunity for cost control, and higher quality care. While many physicians are starting their own outpatient centers, practice administrators have to develop a strategy for specialized care. When practice administrators determine the type of concentration that exists in a particular area, they have to take into account the providers currently operating there. They will then need to focus on getting the most qualified staff to work in their practice so as to make the medical practice a success. However, finding the most qualified medical practitioners is not as easy as it sounds given the shortage of health care professionals in the country. Due to this shortage, there is increased competition by medical practices to recruit the best qualified medical practitioners for their hospitals.
