Which keynotes are important to score in gate exam preparation?

Author: Raviraj Mane

Anyone likes to attempt to clear the exam in the first attempt itself. It all depends on the gate preparation material. There are several keynotes that a candidate should be aware of for gate exam preparation. How does selective studies prove beneficial?

Clarity of concept

In school some subjects are introduced to ensure that the ranking of the student is good even if in some others there is low percentage. There is something similar in case of gate exam preparation. If you have developed a detailed planthen it can improve your ranking. It all begins with the eligibility factor. Once you know that you can take the exam and are qualified i.e you are in the final year you can start preparing much in advance. All the papers have a distinctive pattern all the years. They are coded and have three sections i.e Subject questions, engineering maths, and general aptitude. You have to attempt all the questions in the papers. When you choose a class to attend then you also need to know all about the gate preparation material. Once you have this clarity we can now focus on the main keynotes.

Keep notes on

Depending on the study material given the following things may prove advantages in the training modules. It includes:

Engineering mechanics

It features Law of restitution, rectilinear kinematics, structure analysis, equilibrium of rigid bodies.

Material strength

Learn about stress and strain, struts and columns, beam deflection, bi-axil stress, Mohr’s circle and thin walled shells.

Theory of machines

Kinematics analysis is crucial, mechanism of machines

Design & Vibrations

Static loading, belts/drives and brakes, bearings. Look up undamped vibrations, forced vibrations and free damped vibrations.

Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer

Fundamental concepts, first & second laws, exergy and irreversibility, properties of gases, brayton cycle and gas compression.Heat transfer will include conduction, heat exchangers, convection and radiation.

Applications & material sciences

IC engines, turbo machinery, power engineering, refrigeration. Heat treatment of steel, mechanical properties effects on of imperfections, crystal structure and iron carbon phase.

Other important keynotes

Any aspirant will need to cover welding, metrology, PPC. Forming, Casting, computer integrated manufacturing and operational research. Just know these by heart are not sufficient. Tackle and practice tests which pose difficult level of answering. For all these the study materials like textbooks, reference guides, quiz format should be attempted. Both mechanical systems and numerical problems practice is required if you wish to pass in the first attempt.

Actual preparation

Since the paper is in three sections it is best to take up one section and make a revise of it first. For example the numerical ability and verbal ability preparation can begin in advance. General aptitude is the beginning. Then start with the subject and the Q &Ainvolved. Since this has 70% marks, it will need lot of time and energy to study. If you begin studies before the final year you will get a head start. Take a look at the pervious exam papers. It will give you an idea what to expect.
