History of skateboards design

Author: Mike Litt

Can you imagine skateboards having metal wheels? How can you try stunts with it and how many floors can you tear up? Skateboards have changed a lot over the past decade. Skateboard designs have changed to enhance and support the style.

1. Skate boards initially

Initially, there were 10-inch wide boards with no nose and a big kicktail as everyone was going forward and carving in pool and parks. Slowly, its design was keeping in mind the street floor. The boards got narrow with upturned nose into some early concaves. The next innovation was later in 60’s when the boards were produced with clay wheels.

2. The first innovation

Larry Stevenson made the first innovation to skateboard design when he invented the kicktail on a skate board deck. Basically, it provided a high level of support over the board itself which allows for a wide range of tricks and a way to "brake". Along with skate boarding, there were many other sports which got popular in late 60’s. You can Watch Extreme Physical Stunts Online to gather more gather more knowledge about physical stunts.

3. Thrust Ball bearing> precision bearing

Road rider wheel was created in 1975. These were the first skateboard wheel to use precision bearings as opposed to loose ball bearings. Precision bearings mean cleaner, durable and smoother bearings.

Vert, as pool riding was called, came back in the form of ramp riding back in the mid-80’s and the board got wide again, up to 9 inches wide. Again big concaves, upturned noses and a lot more done tricks more than late 70’s. There were many sessions available on those times that provided skateboarding tricks for beginners. Now is the time when vert is really dying down and street skating going crazy, which is where we’re right now. Now the boards have gotten even narrower than what was called a freestyle board.

So the size and the shapes of the skateboards have increased and decreased from time to time. These changes took place with the needs and demands of the rider and also with the level of this activity. Slowly, people got interested in skateboarding and joined sessions for skateboarding tricks for beginners to get training. No wonder, skateboarding is popular now, but once it wasn’t much loved by the folks. People knew very less about it as it was practiced by very fewer people.
