Will Adam Clayton Powell 4th Bring Back Honour From Congressman Charlie Rangel

Author: Mike Gallagher

Late in the 1970s, Congressman Charles Rangel had been a newcomer in the electoral arena of the boroughs of New York State. Even though he was young, but he had the capability to wrest the Congressional seat of the 13th district in NY State from the sitting Congressman Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Now, over 4 decades have passed and the upcoming primary in June 2016 will see the son of the famous civil rights leader Adam Clayton Powell Jr. fighting again for the democrat seat from this district, thereby again adding fiery competition to the list of aspirants for the primary.

  • Actively involved in the state politics from very young age

Even though Powell entered into the New York political arena from a young age, he had the guts and the tactics to go up against Congressman Charlie Rangel in 2010 for the seat and had managed to remain as an assemblyman till 2010. Besides, during his senate tenure of New York State, he brought about a number of legislations for the benefit of people in Harlem, Fordham and other regions of Bronx, Manhattan and the New York City. In the last couple of decades, Adam Clayton Powell 4th has been in the electoral field and is not new to the tactics. With his Puerto Rican background and growing years in Harlem, he is considered as a local and a good leader. Holding various government posts at high levels in these years, he also has strong control over his knowledge about the functioning of the local councils, state senate and the Congress. Hence, it was natural that he came into the national political arena, especially when the tough adversary Congressman Charles Rangel has announced that he will be not contesting the upcoming primaries but has thrown his weight around for Keith Wright as the democrat Party candidate.

  • Gradual transition into politics and local administration after father’s retirement

In the past, Adam Clayton Powell Jr. had a good clout in the local area, where he served the people in different electoral posts. After his retirement from active politics, his fourth son, Adam Clayton Powell 4th, went on to become a leader like his father and remained in the public’s eye for many years. Now, in 2016, he has again jumped into the fray for the primaries, which would be important from various perspectives. It is to be seen as to how he performs against some of the political heavyweights from the 13th Congressional District, such as Clyde Williams, Suzan Johnson Cook, Assembly man Robert Rodriguez, Keith Wright and Mike Gallagher, the last being a new entrant into the field.

  • Tough contest from other political heavyweights

It will be a tough contest because of the sheer large number of candidates vying for the Democratic Party ticket in the primaries. But, even though his chances are somewhat good, Adam Clayton Powell 4th has tough competition from Congressman Charlie Rangel backed Keith Wright and Clyde Williams. He needs to be in the forefront of the political field, with strong versions of his work towards the people and the power to act on his commitments.
