Read in a quiet place if you have difficulty concentrating on your reading material. Distractions and excessive noise will only affect your reading comprehension because you cannot understand something when you really are not attention to it first.
Read aloud if you do not understand something. If you actually hear the words, you can better understand what the author is trying to say. While this may seem silly, you should be reading in a quiet place anyway, nobody will be there to know that you are reading aloud.
Highlight or make a list of all the unknown words that you will encounter while reading. Keep a dictionary handy so when you come across new words, you can quickly search them discover their meaning. For best long-term vocabulary skills, you can even write unknown words and their definitions in a notebook and review from time to time.
Ask yourself questions as you read. This is sometimes referred to as active reading. Ask yourself what the author is trying to say or what important information you should know is. By asking yourself these questions, you can help you understand that the material is in communication. This also allows you to keep information because you take mental notes. If you find that mental notes do not work, then take your own notes on paper to help you better understand and remember what is going on in your reading.
