Maintain your driveway, the right way
A driveway is that small patch of land where you stop your vehicle and switch that gear inside you which puts you into the relaxed mode. A driveway is your home’s way of telling you welcome. Maintaining it is therefore very important if you want to ensure that welcome stays pleasant and does not turn into an ominous greeting.
We’ve put together a few tips for you to maintain your driveway that will really create more than just a positive impact on your driveway in particular and the home in general.
Concrete Driveway
The best and simplest way to ensure your concrete driveway remains in excellent condition is to clean it regularly. Concrete driveways should also be sealed once every two years when you see signs of wear get too conspicuous. However, if you live in a place that has extreme weather conditions, you might want to seal it more often. Cleaning concrete driveways usually depends on the magnitude of traffic upon it. Any fuel, grease or fluid leakages should be cleaned immediately as they can seep into the concrete and discolour it in addition to breaking it from the ground up.
Brick Driveway
Compared to other driveways, a brick driveway is more expensive, beautiful and as such requires a little extra care. Once every week or two, take a stroll down the driveway and check for any unwanted growth protruding from between the bricks. Pull the weeds out and keep the driveway clean. The spaces between bricks get filled with mud and other residue every once in a while and therefore they need to be sweeped in order to prevent the driveway from getting packed down and losing its aesthetic appeal. Sweep the driveway once every two weeks to ensure there is no dirt accumulation.
Gravel Driveway
This is one of the most economically feasible driveways but one that requires continual maintenance. Weeds are certain to grow in gravel and you will need to keep an eye out for them. Gravel driveways need to be raked but don’t procrastinate and wait for 2 months till things get worse. Rake the driveway once every two weeks to ensure the driveway remains even and smooth without any major sinks and bumps. One of the reasons why most people do not opt for a gravel driveway is due to the possibility of potholes. The moment you see a pothole, rake the gravel back, fill the pothole with sand and even the gravel over it. This prevents clogging and also ensures the driveway stays smooth.
Asphalt (Tar) Driveway
In our country, this is perhaps the most predominant and prevalent driveway, more so because most people live in apartments and housing communities where driveways are made of asphalt. To ensure your asphalt driveway remains spick and span, wash it once a week to remove any and all dirt. Washing the driveway with water also helps you detect early signs of cracks and peels. Immediately clean any fluid leakages like oil, grease, fuel etc. as these fluids damage the surface.
