Unplanned pregnancy can be a nightmare if you are not willing to take up the responsibility for numerous reasons. Abortion is the last resort after all the other options have been considered. Abortion is more complicated than delivery as the placenta remnants need to be removed from woman’s body carefully. Here are some of the safest abortion methods to consider.

Get rid of the idea that there is any so called safe method for abortion per se. however some of the methods are less taxing for a woman than the others. The safe methods discussed here are less harmful for the reproductive system.

Dilation and Curettage (D & C Procedure)

D&C procedure is not only for abortion but also is employed in surgical treatment of various uterine related conditions which are not related to pregnancy. In this method, doctor stretches neck of the womb to cause a premature delivery or the death of the fetus. After the removal of the fetus the womb is examined for any remnants and cleaned. If any remnants are left chances of sepsis or hemorrhage are high.

Vacuum Aspiration

This method is used to tear apart or dismember the fetus using a vacuum device through suction. This technique is criticizes to be very archaic. In this method a surgeon stretches the cervix using a stretching device and inserts a plastic tube into the womb. This tube has a sharp edged opening that dismembers and sucks out the fetus. Many surgeons advocate Vacuum Aspiration as a safe method in the early weeks of pregnancy. The appropriate time for abortion using this technique is between 13-19 weeks of pregnancy. To bring out the remaining part of the fetus that are too large to be sucked out through the tube are removed using other devices.

Mostly women undergoing abortion are young and resort to it due to non medical reasons. This procedure gives freedom to recover fast but the recovery also depends on the age and health condition of the woman. There are no evidences of health risks in the long run due to this abortion method.

Hysterotomy

Not a preferred abortion method, Hysterotomy is similar to caesarian section surgery. In this method the fetus alive is surgically brought out of the womb by cutting open the abdomen. In most cases the fetus is left to die but some countries prohibits this making it the legal duty of the surgeon. This is a deliberate killing of the fetus by removing it from the womb and cutting the umbilical cord that supplies oxygen to the fetus.

This method is known to be associated with high risks of pulmonary embolism and thrombosis. Also the successful future pregnancy is endangered by the abdomen scar.

Salt Poisoning

Performed after 4 months of the pregnancy in this method a concentrated salt solution is injected into the womb. The salt kills the fetus by diluting amniotic fluid. This method is cheapest and fastest as abortion happens within an hour. After 24 hours a dead baby delivered by the woman.

The potential unexplained health risks of this method are extremely high.
