Expect to Have a 3D Printed EYE by 2027

The above titled is not intended as a PUN; Researchers from Italy have announced a fully stable working version of EYE – 3D printed eyes, by Italy-based product design studio MHOX, made from bio-ink that contains that same cells required to replace those found in our natural eyes.

"Latest developments in bioprinting and biohacking let us imagine that in the near future it would be possible to easily print organic, functional body parts, allowing the human to replace defected districts or enhance standard performance," said Filippo Nassetti, Lead Designer at MHOX.

Once the natural set of eyes are surgically removed, the company plans to install a ‘deck’ inside the head, which will allow installation & upgradation. According to Nassetti, "we envision that the link between the deck and the EYE will be based on attractive forces between the tissues more than mechanical joints. To replace the EYE the user only has to put it in position inside the skull, and the tissues of the Deck and the EYE connect automatically."

Your Future Home Will Grow and Repair Itself

With the onset of IoT-enabled infrastructure, DARPA’s Engineered Living Materials (ELM) program seeks to integrate buildings & building materials with the characteristics of living systems. Materials will be able to grow on site, repair themselves, and or adapt to the environment when needed.

"The vision of the ELM program is to grow materials on demand where they are needed. Imagine that instead of shipping finished materials, we can ship precursors and rapidly grow them on site using local resources. And, since the materials will be alive, they will be able to respond to changes in their environment and heal themselves in response to damage," said Justin Gallivan, ELM program manager.

Breaking World Records with 5G Technology

4G is, sadly, a thing of the past ;) Researchers from Sweden’s Lund University and UK’s University of Bristol have just set a new world record for wireless spectrum efficiency with 5G technology.

According to their press release, "5G is a wireless technology that will lead to less energy consumption and enable fast data transmission while allowing many simultaneous users. 5G is expected to hit the market around 2020, and intense work to standardize this next-generation mobile technology is currently taking place. Massive MIMO – which is based on base stations being equipped with hundreds of antennas each, compared to the few we see today – is one of the prime candidates to achieve the capacity required of the mobile systems of the future."

"Setting a new world record was a significant event as it demonstrated that it is possible to transmit 22 times more data compared to current wireless systems. Although the goal is for 5G to increase the total transmission capacity by a factor 1 000, this is still a big step", says Malkowsky.
