Petrol Chainsaws-A Guide For Safe Operation

Author: Deepak Jain

Petrol Chainsaw is amongst the most useful and efficient tools used for cutting of overgrown branches, pruning trees or cutting logs for fire. Over the years, many improvements have happened in the design in order to ensure that the chainsaw provide excellent performance and is safe to use. As is the case with other machines as well, safety is always an important area of concern when operating the chainsaws.

Taking into consideration the fact that since this machine can easily chop down a small tree it is obvious that it is extremely powerful and therefore is potentially dangerous as well. Having said this, a petrol chainsaw can be quite a safe option if the precautions mentioned below are followed.

Preparing For Operation

You should always read the instruction manual properly. An instruction manual describes how to mount guide bars and chains, how to mix fuel with other lubricants and how to power it safely. Most chainsaws are designed to operate the throttle with right index finger. Some models come with a hand guard that also operates as a chain brake i.e. a safety mechanism that promptly stops the chain from running when the brake is tripped. Make sure that you are aware of all this, before you start using the saw.

Operating the Petrol Chainsaw: Precautions To Follow

  • Dress Appropriately

When operating a chainsaw, it is important that you choose the correct dress for yourself. Right protective clothing is absolutely critical when using a chainsaw. An appropriate dress enables you to move freely and at the same time offers protection to the body. Yet another precaution to follow is to use some sort of safety headgear e.g. a hard hat. A hard hat protects the head from sustaining any injury while operating a chainsaw. Wearing a strong set of protective eye glasses protects the eyes from all kinds of projectiles and harmful objects.

  • Be Cautious While Refueling

For refueling a petrol powered chainsaw, completely turn off the engine first and avoid contact with spark, smoke or inflammable objects. Do not spill petrol on a hot engine and always use a filtering funnel or a gas can with a flexible hose to fill the fuel tank. Avoid starting the saw in the place where the refueling was done and be extra cautious of fire during dry weather.

  • Take Care While Carrying the Chain Saw

Stop the saw when carrying it from one place to the next to avoid any mishaps en-route. When moving around with the saw, ensure that the guide bar is pointed to the rear, and if moving along a downward incline, then the bar should be pointed to the front.

  • Keep A First-Aid Box Around

Have the number and address of the nearest emergency unit handy and always carry a first aid kit when working with a chainsaw.
