Top 10 Reasons To Advertise On Radio

With around 200m radio listeners in India, the number surpasses the internet users. Certainly it is still the good old medium to reach a large number of people. Radio is still a basic media for many especially for junta who find solace in the radio and for them Radio is a "buddy" right from the morning to the end of the day.

Advertising has become paramount for businesses to keep updating their products/services in the mind of the people or stay in loop of the market and when we know that advertising is a highlighted strategy in the whole business then why not look for a healthier way (budget friendly, effective, & long lasting) medium to reach the targeted market.

Radio as such fits in the definition of a healthy medium and here, I put points in support of my vote for Radio.

Top 10 Reasons To Advertise On Radio

  1. On air, on time: Radio is a media that stays with people almost all day long and that’s the advantage, as the advertiser can reach people at a time when they are planning for something like going out for shopping, dinner or other product. This gives information they actually were looking for and thus affects their purchasing behaviour.
  2. No switching the channel: Radio is often associated with the emotional part of the brain and if an advertiser works in that direction and creates and ad that is intriguing, emotional and curious then switching to a different channel while an ad is being aired is too low as compared to TV where though an ad is a visual treat people prefer to change the channel.
  3. More effective than TV: TV offers the visual content, but its radio that can create the kind of emotions it needs for an advertisement to be effective. The funny, quirky, music or the soothing voice in the radio does what TV fails to do. Researchers say radio being the "audio only" medium stimulates a different part of the brain! People listen to the radio at their own will so their reaction and experience differ from each other.
  4. A companion that stays: Radio has an emotional bond with people, especially in rural and semi-urban areas and it’s still the morning to night companion that stays with people. What more an advertiser wants? A medium that is ‘on’ for most of the time and keeps your spirit up, so switching off rarely occurs.
  5. Here, there and everywhere: In the car, at home, while doing chores, walking, reading, and cooking; which another medium can be at so many places, only one- Radio. This creates the multiplier effect of an advertisement and that’s what matter to an advertiser. With the favourite station playing their songs, they don’t mind listening to ads in between.
  6. Uncluttered medium: When you are watching a TV and an ad pops up, you change the channel because that is too much of the ad in between the show. But radio offers a one-to-one connection and the ad time is not as high as TV, enough to not to irritate a person to switch the channel.
  7. Impressive reach: Targeting the right market is very important for an ad to reach the people it wants to and that’s why choosing the right channel matters. With radio, you reach only the people you want to and not to the people who aren’t interested in your product. Imagine trying to sell a diaper on a radio frequency where the listeners are from 18-25!
  8. Saves your money: Advertising on TV is very costly though the viewership has gone down, and newspaper’s reach is low and yet costly. And with both, reaching the preferred target market is a problem. Solution- Radio. It reaches almost everywhere where you want your product to reach, and advertising 3 times a day on the radio is certainly less costly.
  9. Identity, brand, and business: When a person listens to some emotion evoking ad or some funny creative ad on the radio he connects with it and when its 3-4 times a day he remembers it the next time when he is out to buy the similar kind of product/service. A brand that is audible on the radio frequently definitely creates a place in the brain.
  10. Your ad is always visible: Don’t let your advertisement hide in the 20 something pages of a newspaper (or buried in between the competitor’s ad) OR in the TV where switching to another channel just takes a click. Radio offers the great space for advertisers to connect to people.
