54 Years of History
The history of Hightower Castle dates back to 1962 when a prominent Lebanese engineer, Hussein Kaedbay, wanted to build a private residence that would keep him and his family safe in times of conflict. The large structure on top of the hill was protected by a high fortified wall, a tall watchtower that stood beside its main gate and a long, underground escape tunnel that the residents could use in case of emergency.
Kaedbay died in 1975 – the same year that the civil war started – and the property was bought by Kamal and Ghada Aridi. During the years of conflict, the structure and its fortification suffered severe damage, but after the end of the war in 1990, renovation works started both on the interior and the exterior of the large house. However, Aridi didn’t want just to restore the damages. He had bigger dreams about his property. He wanted to turn the large house into a real castle.
The addition of four turrets on the corners of the old building made it look majestic, but it took years of hard work to turn it into the charming castle it is today. Restoration work still continues on the interior of the Castle and its rooms are expected to be ready by 2018. On the other hand, its gardens, walkways and seating areas are more than ready to host outdoor weddings in Lebanon as well as all kinds of events.
