Guide To Industrial Metal Detectors

Author: Dattu Mali

Metal particulates can enter into bulk products including foods, chemicals, medicines, etc. during the production. Ferrous, non-ferrous and stainless steel contaminants enter into the production lines through many sources. Metal Detectors are used in the production lines to prevent the equipment from damage and down time and ensure that no contaminated product reaches the consumers. Most of the commonly used metal detectors use a balanced coil. Another type known as ferrous-in-foil search head is also used to detect the magnetic steel and other ferrous metals.

With the help of their three coils, the Metal Detectors create a magnetic field using high frequency electric current. As soon as a contaminated product enters into this magnetic field, a disruption triggers a change in the voltage of the receivers. Any change in the voltage of the receivers further triggers the reject mechanism causing it to reject the contaminated materials. Now, the Metal Detection Systems consist of four different sections. These sections are explained briefly below:

Features Of Metal Detectors

  • Search Head - This is the most visible part of the metal detectors. The products pass through an aperture to be scanned for contamination.
  • User Interface or Control Panel – All the adjustment regarding material sensitivity is done here. For example, salty or moist products are conductive that creates a disturbance in the magnetic field confusing the sensors to trigger the reject mechanism. So, the detector’s sensitivity for each product is accordingly set here.
  • Transport System- This is used to move materials through the detection system. It is also known as the conveyor belt and is used to move materials from one end to the other end. A non-metallic tube is used in case of the liquid and powdered products. The conveyors made up of stainless steel are durable and ensure efficient functioning.
  • Reject Mechanism- The metal detectors use a number of reject system such as air blasts, drop chute and push arms. The reject mechanism detects and rejects the contaminated product from the production lines. Most of the reject systems are pneumatically driven.
