Classification Of Natural Dyes

Author: Rachit Jain

Natural Dyes are derived from plants, animals and minerals. The process of making Natural Dyes typically involves crushing, grinding and steeping of the resource in water to extract the colorant from it. The colorant so obtained is further treated to make Natural Dye. Depending on their source of origin, Natural Dyes can broadly be classified into two categories, both of which are discussed briefly in the following section.

Plant Dyes

Plants have natural colorants which give them a specific color; this color is extracted to make a variety of Natural Dyes. Dyes are extracted from plant products like fruit, leave, bark and root. Since plants in their natural forms are widely available in innumerable colors, hence a variety of Natural Dyes can be extracted from them. Following are a few types of Natural Dyes which are made from plants:

  • Indigo is a blue colored natural dye which is obtained from indigo plant.
  • Catechu is a brown colored dye extracted from resin.
  • Henna plant is the source used for orange and red dyes.
  • Yellow dye is extracted from fustic tree.
  • Saffron (orange) dye is extracted from crocus flower.
  • Violet dye is extracted from the roots of turmeric plant.
  • Black Dye is obtained from logwood tree.
  • Yellow Dye is also extracted from inner barks of black oak tree.
  • Red Dye is extracted from roots of madder.

Animal Dyes

Natural Dyes are also extracted from bodies of animals. These dyes are prepared from secretions like blood and other fluids of animals. Following are few types of natural dyes which are extracted from the bodies of animals.

  • Tyrian purple is a Natural Dye which is extracted from bodies of marine snails.
  • Cochineal red is a dye extracted from an invertebrate which is known as cochineal.
  • A brown dye is extracted from secretion of few species of cuttlefish.
  • Kermes Natural Dye is one of the oldest types of animal dyes, which is made of dried and fermented bodies of Kermes ilicis and Kermes vermilio Planchon insects.
