With the increase in the number of foreign tourists in India, the young Indian population is getting attracted to the different flavors of wines that are mostly liked by the foreigners. Traditionally India was never a country of the regular wine drinkers; instead, they like to prefer the liquor beverages that were high in alcohol. But increasing adoption of the western culture, people take drinking wine as a status symbol among the society. As a matter of fact, wine is produced from the squashed pulp of grapes and contains no alcohol in it. The wine is not just a drink, but it is directly related to the health benefits to the consumer. By adopting the western culture, people are getting more and more conscious about their looks which are a one of the topmost reason for the expansion of wine companies in India because by consuming a glass of wine, there are many health benefits that come along with it such as reducing risk of heart strokes, works as anti-depressant, anti-ageing, and so on. In a survey report, it is stated that the Indian wine market is emerging at a steady rate of 30% every year and the metro cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Bangalore alone produces 80% of the total wine consumers in India. By analyzing the steady rise in the wine consumer’s ratio, it is expected that the wine industry will grow in three-fold and will reach approximately 2.4 million cases in the upcoming years.

Factors influencing the rise of the wine industry:

  • Traveling to various countries around the world
  • Getting exposed to the western culture through traveling to other countries or the foreign tourists visiting the country. The exposure to the western culture has motivated the enthusiast young generation (between the age of 25 to 30) to consume wine, the age of wine drinkers in other countries is usually above 30 years
  • Believing that wine consumption is a part of luxury lifestyle
  • Increasing disposable income in the urban areas which indicates that the people can afford such expensive beverages
  • Relaxed restrictions for the distribution and lowered tax on wine by many state governments have led people to freely consume wine
  • High import and customs duties on wine have motivated many entrepreneurs to start the wine companies in India to avoid paying high costs for consuming wine.

Even though the wine companies in India are steadily catching up with the Indian wine consumers, but the country is still not in the list of the top wine consuming countries. This is because the wine makers still don’t have a complete knowledge about the right climate to harvest the grape, grape variants, types of wines, and wine aging techniques.
