Different Types Of Lamps

Author: Todd York-Brown

Light is vital to see the world around us and with the improvement of technology, newer sources of lighting are evolving day-in and day-out. These lighting systems vary in their quality and intensity and so choosing the right type of lighting that can meet the requirements of a desired location is highly important. This section shall brief you on the different types of lamp choices available.

Various Lamp Choices Available:

  • Incandescent Lamps

They have been used for centuries. They are cheap to make, have a good spectrum, offer consistent performance and rate high on the colour rendering index. These lamps produce light as the power flows from the wall socket directly through a thin filament of tungsten. As a result, the tungsten filament placed in the glass chamber glows. They are most suited for areas where light is used for shorter time periods and less frequently.

  • Halogen Lamps

They are also known as tungsten halogen or quartz iodine lamp. They make use of halogens like iodine or bromine. They provide a better performance as compared to incandescent lamps. Halogen gas and tungsten filament produces a chemical reaction. As a result, the evaporated tungsten gets re-deposited back on the filament. This increases the efficiency and life span as compared to the incandescent lamps. Due to their small size, halogen lamps can be easily used in compact optical systems like projectors.

  • Gas Discharge Lamps

These lamps generate light by sending electrical discharge through iodised gas. Typically, these lamps use noble gases like argon, neon or krypton. These have a higher functional life and provide greater efficiency as compared to incandescent lamps and LED lamps. They have a short warm-up time. They are ideal for outdoor lighting since their peak spectrum is least harmful to the ecosystem. They could be a good choice to illuminate places that require lot of light.

  • LED Lamps

These are formed by assembling light-emitting diodes. Their life span and efficiency is several times higher than incandescent and fluorescent lamps. They do not require any warm-up time in order to light-up. These are environment friendly and do not have toxic materials like mercury in them. Also, they do not emit UV emissions and can be successfully used in extreme temperatures as opposed to the conventional lamps.
