The Beautiful Beaches of Grenada

Author: Lisa Jeeves

Also known as the "Island of Spice", the Caribbean island of Grenada is one of those truly idyllic places to plan a holiday. Luxurious accommodation abounds, but one of the best-located places to stay is undoubtedly the well-known Calabash. Grenada has a history that dates back well before it was a French colony in the mid 1600s, and with influences that went from French to British from the mid 1700s - until the island gained independence in the 1900s - it is a unique and fascinating location. It will give you plenty to do, too, both in the interior of the island and on the fabulous beaches.

As you explore from your base at the fabulous Calabash, Grenada will open up to you in a most wonderful way. You will be able to see the French influence in the names of many of the places, even though, in fact, it feel less French than many of the other Caribbean islands. While you are there on a summer holiday, there are several beaches you simply must visit - such as Grand Anse Beach, La Sagesse, and Magazine Beach.

Grand Anse

As the most famous and most beach (and not too far from the Calabash), Grenada’s Grand Anse Beach is well worthy of the title. With its two-mile stretch of white sand in a lovely bay, it is no wonder tourists and locals alike flock here to get soak up the sun, play water sports, go diving, or just to swim in the calm, sheltered waters. The beautiful beach is considered one of the prettiest in the Caribbean and it is often the one featured in advertisements. While there you will have access to all the amenities, restaurants, bars, and shopping you could want.

La Sagesse

With large expanses of silvery sand that come up to a sheltered bay area, and very easy to reach from the Calabash, Grenada locals extol La Sagesse Beach as a real gem for those who want to have a day out with their family. This gem on the southern coast of the island is hardly built up at all, so while there are few choices should you want a meal or drink, this adds to its charm. The waters are shallow and perfect for children.

Magazine Beach

Often remarked on as the home of the Aquarium Restaurant, Magazine Beach and all it has to offer is not far from the Calabash. Grenada is not short of stunning beaches, and Magazine Beach slots perfectly on to the list. It is one of the best places to go if you want to feel like you are in a secluded location, while only being steps away from the action. With loads of activities you can enjoy on and near the water and an aquarium nearby, there are few places that boast such beautiful surrounds.
