7 Tips for Packing Fragile Valuables

Author: Matt Fuller

Moving house can be stressful. A poll of 2000 adults in the UK by E.ON ranked it high up with getting married and getting divorced. The stress is only for the duration of the move and a short period after. Soon, you settle down, unscathed. But that is only if you do everything right. One way the horror might linger is if you lose something or break a valuable. The problem is that some things are not just valuable because they are expensive. Some are actually irreplaceable. Priceless.

So how do you pack your load without scratching, cracking, denting, or outright losing any valuables? Here are 7 tips.

Use bubble wrap

Bubble wrap is excellent for cushioning your precious possessions. It prevents breakage and cracking by absorbing shock as you move your items around. You can carefully line the inner surfaces of the packing boxes, or, for extra protection, wrap the items themselves up. For larger pieces for which bubble wrap might be impractical, you could use thick soft blankets. Blankets are perfect for any items with sharp pointy edges that bubble wrap simply can't handle.

That grand Piano that has been in the family for three generations? You might not be able to move it. It is heavy and that requires strength. It has delicate surfaces and fragile pars and those require technique. Now, you might be able to round up some muscle to bully the piano out, but, for proper technique, you might be better off finding professional movers. There are some removalists that have experience moving large heavy pianos safely.

Handle certain items yourself

If you have opted to use the help of professional movers, you might still want to handle the most precious items yourself. You will be sure that they are receiving the careful attention they require and you won't have to hold your breath as you watch others handle them.

Don't forget to label them

The horrific chaos that comes with moving increases the risk of breaking your valuable possessions. In the mire of everything, it just becomes easy to trip on your son’s RC car, or bump that tiffany lamp into the wall as you rush out. You want as much order as possible and one way to do that is by labelling everything as you pack. The valuable content should be recorded on an inventory list, and the boxes themselves labelled ‘fragile’ so everyone knows how to handle them.

Don't Overpack- Or Underpack

Cramming your valuables might be a great way to do the job fast but that will most definitely end in scratches, cracks and other undesirable results. Firstly, the crowded items will rub against each other unduly leading to scratched delicate surfaces. Secondly, overloading will cause the boxes to bulge, causing them to lose their shape. This makes it harder to safely stack them in the truck.

But again, do not under-pack. If the content is to free to move about, there will be too much risk of breakage and cracks. Make sure everything is firm- not too tight, not too loose. But it might not be a good idea to have more than one or two fragile items per box just to fill it up. In this case, you could pack it with pieces of clothing or bubble wrap to fill up the free spaces.

Invest in proper materials

You won't be moving house every month. This is something that happens only a couple of times in a lifetime but the ramifications of anything going wrong might be far reaching. You, therefore, want to make sure you put in every penny you can just make sure the move goes right. One area you do not want to be a cheapskate in are the packing materials themselves. Make sure you get proper bubble wrap, proper tape, and, most importantly, proper boxes. You don't want thin walled boxes. The ones with corrugations work the best as they are sturdier.

Make sure you are insured

Your homeowner's insurance might protect you from some damage during your move. Some removalists also have insurance for their clients. For extra safety, be sure to declare your valuables with your removalist to make them extra-aware of them, and you will be safer in case something goes wrong.
