The 2018 Subaru Outback Facelift Revealed
A major facelift for the forthcoming 2108 Subaru Outback was revealed prior to the opening of the New York Motor Show. This early look showed an Outback with revisions that were intentionally highly reminiscent of those shown on the new Liberty earlier in the year. The changes go further than skin deep, let’s take a closer look at what we can look forward to.
The New Exterior:
The first noticeable change is a that the new Subaru Outback has revised height, being taller than the outgoing model. There are new C shaped headlights that have LED daytime running lights housed in a new grille. The front cladding has been redesigned with new bumpers that offer better protection from debris and stones. Standard models will feature 17" alloy wheels; higher specification models will have brand new 18" rims.
In the Cabin and Under the Bonnet:
The main change in the cabin is a new upgraded infotainment system; the 8" display replaces the 7" unit. The multifunction driver display has increased from 6.2" up to 6.5" for better visual feedback. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay functionality are supported with smartphone mirroring, faster processing and a more accurate voice recognition system. The US market Outback will still feature the 2.5 litre four cylinder and the 3.6 litre six cylinder boxer powerplants. It appears that these engines will have the same specifications as the outgoing models, but this is unconfirmed. As one would expect from a Subaru, we have a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) and all wheel drive as standard features.
Even More New Features:
There are some new safety features available as standard on the 2018 Outback. Firstly, there are now headlights that automatically adjust their beam angle based on input from the steering wheel. The EyeSight safety system now has automatic high beam activation, new lane keep assist functionality and updated tyre pressure monitoring. Elsewhere, there are other new features, such as reshaped wing mirrors, thicker rear wheel aprons, sound insulated glass front side windows and quieter short pitch chain on the CVT. Tweaks have been made to the braking, power steering and suspension settings to enhance the driving experience.
