Get rid of Cockroaches: The most annoying pest

Cockroaches are the most common and irritating insect pest in our houses. Though there are about 4,000 species of cockroach globally, only 30 species are found indulge with human habits and living. Among them three predominant species are the American cockroach, the Oriental cockroach and the German cockroach. They hide in small spaces in and between shelves, books, sofa cushion, kitchen vessels, grocery shelves and under shelf liners and are highly active at night and in dark.

Why cockroaches are most annoying pest?

They are 13-20 mm in length and pale brown with two dark-brown stripes behind the head

The largest cockroach, approximately 40-60 mm long

Female live up to 18 months and may produce approximately 430 offspring

Female produce 80 young through their lifetime of 5-6 months.

They found most frequently in basements, storage rooms, garbage and drainage areas

Preventive measures to Control Cockroaches

  1. Don’t Leave waste food
  • Maintain the kitchen and store room dry and clean.
  • Store food items properly and remove food spillage from dust bin, pet feeder and kitchen utensils
  • Put all refuse and food remnants into a bin with well-fitting lid.
  • Contents of the dustbin must be emptied completely at least daily.
  1. Don’t create a habitat for Cockroaches
  • Periodically Clean up waste materials and unused articles especially old newspapers and magazines at homes
  • Inspect and clean up the stocks in shelves, wardrobes, concealed places like false ceilings, air ducts and wire ducts once in two month and
  • Seal any cracks and crevices at ceilings and on walls and floor
  1. Stop entry of Cockroaches
  • Cover the drainage openings with drain covers and replace them if they are found damaged
  • Seal all openings on external walls, floors and roofs through which pipes and wires pass or left by installation of split-type air-conditioners;
  • Apply a band of petroleum jelly at least 10 cm in width around dry drain hole to prevent cockroach from passing through the hole; and
  • Install wire mesh of 2mm at drain holes for preventing entry.

Control Measures for Cockroaches

1. Trapping

  • Use sticky traps at places frequented by cockroaches. Whenever possible, place traps either against a wall or in a corner of a floor, a shelf or a drawer

2. Poisoning

  • Use insecticide with residual effect for killing the pest by contact;
  • Set poisonous bait to kill cockroaches. The bait will not only kill those cockroaches consuming the bait but also those in the harbourage indirectly;
  • Caution must be taken when using insecticides. Follow strictly the application instructions on the label to avoid harming people and animals.
