  • In western astrology, the zodiac is based on the movement of the sun around the earth's equator. Thus, when the sun crosses the equator going north it become Aris and south becomes libra. Whereas, the Vedic astrology the zodiac is based on fixed constellations.
  • The major planets in western astrology includes Pluto, Neptune and Uranus while in Vedic astrology, the visible planets like sun, moon, venus, mercury, Jupiter and Saturn are accounted for.
  • The fact that ascendant defines the personality and physical appearance to a large extent is believed by both the astrology. However, the way it is calculated vary. Westerners consider the degree of the ascendant as the starting of the first house and the other houses are calculated equally or unequally from there. Whereas, in Vedic they are equally sized houses of 30 degrees each.
  • The other difference is the shape of the birth charts. Western astrology is a circle and the signs and the positions of the planets is shown by the symbols. The houses are arranged counterclockwise. In Vedic astrology, it is the square that is divided into 12 sections having three data points planet's, data points and the house.

Western techniques

  3. The transits are the current position of the planets that is based on the birth charts
  • As per the Vedic astrology, that has exceptions for planets like Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and Lunar nodes. Every other planets accepts the house opposite to them.   • Vedic astrology has survived for thousands of years whereas western astrology was either destroyed or not transcripted and the past thus had to be reinvented in the past 100 years.
  • Western astrology has a strong emphasis on the psychological nature of the individual whereas Vedic looks at karmic tendencies and also give equal attention to when such tendencies are likely to manifest.
  • The harmonic or the sub-charts are looked differently, they reveal the details of relationships, career, health, family, finances, spirituality etc.
