Moving Tip: How to Safely Pack and Move Plates

Plates are one of those household items you need to take extra care of when moving. They’re extremely fragile and can easily break during packing and moving. Here are some friendly tips to safely pack and move plates.

What you’ll need:

  • Medium sized boxes
  • Sheets of paper (newspaper works great)
  • Foam plates
  • Sticky tape
  • Bubble wrap
  • Clothes and towels

Cushion the inside of the box

Scrunch up some paper and place it on the bottom of the box, creating a soft bed for the plates. Crumpled paper absorbs the shock of transportation more efficiently. Don’t hesitate to use up your old newspapers. You’ll need about 6" of paper to get the box nice and soft.

Place plates in boxes vertically

To avoid turning your expensive dishes into shards of china, one of the best packing techniques is to place the plates vertically inside the box. This reduces the pressure put on plates when stacked on top of each other.

Wrap each plate in padding

Keep your plates safe by individually wrapping plates in bubble wrap. You can always trust this padding to do an excellent job protecting your plates from any damage. If you don’t want to waste money on bubble wrap then using clothes and towels as padding is a great solution.

Put foam plates in between plates

Another secure way to safely pack and move your plates is by purchasing some foam plates and placing one in between each plate. This simple hack will keep your plates in place and prevent them from clanking into one other.

Pack boxes lightly

You don’t have to fit all your plates in one box. It’s better to use multiple boxes so that they weigh less and chances that the bottom will split open are closer to nil. Fill in any empty space with some soft items, such as socks, scarves or soft toys.

Stack fragile boxes on top of heavier boxes

Your plates are mostly at risk during the actual move. So make sure you load the boxes containing the plates correctly. Stack the fragile boxes on top of less fragile boxes. This way the plates won’t be at risk of getting crushed during transport.

Fill a bucket instead of a box

Buckets work as great containers when it comes to plates. They are sturdy, secure and are a tight fit for plates. This means plates have less room to move and break during transportation. Oh, and the fact that the bottom won’t give way is an extra bonus. To ensure even greater plate safety, add some padding or foam plates between plates.

Mark boxes as ‘fragile’

Always label boxes containing plates as ‘fragile’, either with a sticker or using a marker to write it down. When loading and unloading the truck, movers will know to take extra care moving those particular boxes.
