South Africa’s top cities
Cape Town
Sitting beneath the Table Mountains, surrounded by coasts, mountains and tropical forests, Cape Town is one of South Africa’s, if not the world’s, most beautiful cities. Roam the centre and you will find seafront promenades, colourful architecture and a thriving arts scene. And just outside the city you’ll discover some of the oldest vineyards outside Europe, plus incredible National Parks and breath-taking coastal roads.
Johannesburg
Johannesburg is the biggest city in South Africa, and a thrilling metropolis. Johannesburg has new restaurants, galleries and trendy bars popping up at an incredible speed, and offers visitors a truly vibrant arts scene. And not far from the city, you can explore why the region has been named the ‘Cradle of Humanity’, at the Sterkfontein Caves, which showcases important ancient fossils and boasts deep underground lakes.
Durban
In Durban you’ll find pristine beaches, like Umhlanga Beach, and waterfront attractions lining its central 'Golden Mile’, including water parks and aquariums. In this bustling city you’ll also find some of the largest street markets in the country, and impressive museums, like the Phanisi Museum, where you can trace life in Durban back hundreds of thousands of years. And just outside the city you’ll find some of South Africa’s oldest nature reserves.
East London
East London, in the Eastern Cape region of South Africa, is a coastal city overlooking the Indian Ocean. Here you can explore notable architecture, including the East London City Hall, forts dating back to the 19th century, plus the double-decker bridge over the Buffalo River, the only bridge of its kind in the country. Alternatively, take the ‘Sunshine Route’ through the Eastern Cape to Port Elizabeth and enjoy some of the most spectacular coastal views in the country.
George
George is a city in the Western Cape region of South Africa, and the largest city along the country’s Garden Route, an area of natural beauty nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains. The Garden Route surrounding George boasts some of the best beaches in the country, and a coastline backed by ancient forests, a combination that makes the region one of South Africa’s most beautiful.
Port Elizabeth
Fly into Port Elizabeth and you could venture into some of South Africa’s most beautiful natural landscapes. From Port Elizabeth you could take the Garden Route, or the Sunshine Route, through the Eastern Cape, travelling past game reserves and beautiful rocky coastlines. Stop off at Addo National Elephant Park, the third largest National Park in South Africa, and you could go on a safari adventure and spot Africa’s ‘Big 7’.
