3 Attractions in Peru Other than Machu Picchu

Author: Lisa Jeeves

Peru is one of the most popular destinations in the world for trekkers, and one of the main reasons for this, of course, is that it is home to Machu Picchu. This ancient Inca site is one of the wonders of the world; it attracts thousands of tourists each year, many of whom hike to it. However, when you're planning on a trek in Peru, you should remember that there is much more than just Machu Picchu to explore in this fascinating and beautiful country. Here are three excellent attractions to see besides Machu Picchu.

1. Floating Islands on Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca is a vast body of water especially well known for its floating islands. Visitors are drawn to view the lake and these islands, and if you're planning a trek in Peru in the vicinity you really shouldn't miss it.

Head to Puno and from here you can take a boat out to visit the islands. These unique islands are made from totora reeds and are inhabited by the Uros tribe, which has been around since before the time of the Incas. Santa María is the main island, but there are about 40 in total - they change in size all the time and new ones are also evolving. This is a unique opportunity to experience a very different way of life and a fascinating location.

2. The Sacred Valley of the Incas

The Urubamba Valley, known as the Sacred Valley of the Incas, is one of the most popular places to head to – as it is home to Machu Picchu. But even if you do not see the famous ruins, there are plenty of other ruins here you should definitely explore.

This valley was the heart of the Inca civilisation. Formed by the Urubamba River, it became the location for many settlements, and you can see the remains of stunning Inca ruins throughout the area when you trek in Peru here. Some of the top places to visit are Aguas Calientes, Ollantaytambo, Tipon and Pisac, and there are fascinating ruins to see in each place.

3. Colca Canyon

Colca Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world, reaching depths of 4,160 metres. It is located in the Arequipa region, in the south of the country, and it is an incredibly beautiful area to explore. Many visitors head to Chivay, which is a great place to start. From here, you can see the nearby La Calera Springs, and you can experience indigenous cultures, ancient Inca irrigation systems and farming terraces, and even adventure sports. As you traverse the beautiful landscapes, look out for hummingbirds, eagles and mighty condors.

When you head off for a trek in Peru, remember that there is more to this beautiful country than just Machu Picchu. Although this world-famous site is well worth seeing and is, deservedly, the highlight of the country, there are many more beautiful attractions to discover along the way.
