Alzheimer’s Action Day: Advocate for Those Suffering From This Disease

Alzheimer’s Day helped to raise awareness about this disease that, statistics show, affects one in every 10 seniors. This day was established to pause and reflect on how to be a better advocate for those suffering with Alzheimer’s. Below are some suggestions to help continue to promote the care of a senior loved one living with Alzheimer’s:
- Learn about treatment options- While there’s no known cure for Alzheimer’s, it’s possible to help manage the symptoms. Current medications for Alzheimer’s give some benefits, butresearchers are continually working to find better options. - Find a doctor experienced in working with older adults–An Alzheimer’s patient needs an understanding healthcare professional. Find a physician who’s acquainted with senior health care and patients with memory disorders, one who can coordinate care effectively and prescribe medications accurately. You may start by asking people who have lived with a loved one suffering from this disease such as relatives, neighbors, and colleagues for recommendations.
- Be prepared when meeting the doctor – To ensure your loved one receives the best care from their doctor, make a list of all the questions you wish to ask, things you have observed about the loved one’s behavior, and a list of all the medications they take. Being prepared is a big help when meeting with doctors.
