Tooth decay remains the most common chronic disease in both children and adults, even though, it’s easily preventable. Recent studies stats,

  • 92% of adults 20 to 60s have had tooth decay in their permanent teeth
  • Families with higher incomes and more education have had more tooth decay
  • 42% of children 2 to 11 have had dental caries in their primary teeth

Tooth decay can kill your teeth, create infections and also affect the overall health of your body. Australian Dietary Guidelines recommend that all Australians need to limit their intake of drinks containing sugary foods including sugar-sweetened soft drinks, fruit drinks, flavoured mineral waters, sports drinks and the list goes on. Dentist Parramatta concluded that the above mentioned foods are not required for good health and may cause oral problems and other health diseases if drunk in large amounts.

Say "No" to Sugars and Acids

One of the leading causes of tooth decay is "Sugars and Acids". That’s because over intake of these acidic beverages can wear away the enamel of your teeth. Your enamel is the strongest part of your body that keeps your teeth from getting infected by bacteria and other decay causing organisms. Once your enamel is weakened, it will act as the bacteria ground that gives a plaque a chance to eat away at your tooth. So, it’s better to avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks.

If you’re going to take sugary drinks, it’s advisable to drink it through a straw. This limit how much contact the liquid makes with your tooth, thus saving your teeth from tooth decay.

Say "No" to Hand Candies

Tempting to open that crunchy lollipop? But, don’t do it! Biting down hard candies can crack and chip your teeth. A damaged or cracked tooth might be more susceptible to tooth decay, so think twice before munching down a hard candy.

Stay Hydrated

Staying hydrated by drinking as much of water is the vital step to take care your oral health. Drinking more water will help you rinse your teeth and washes away chemicals, acids and sugar coating that cling to your teeth and also washes the food spills that trapped between your teeth. Apart from all these, drinking water also enhances your saliva production that helps your mouth flushing out bacteria before they take a place on your teeth, gums and tongue. While drinking fluids, it’s advisable to stay away from sugary flavoured fruit drinks etc.
