The greatest challenge to achieve greatness in any field of work is to keep learning and challenging oneself. In case of vocals, it is to keep pushing the boundaries gradually and with caution to not harm the vocal chords. It is well known that everyone has their own capacities but it is always recommended to push those lines in order to better one. Finding a sweet spot in terms of vocals is important but it’s also equally important to try to extend one’s vocal range.
There are some techniques that the professionals practice and recommend to extend the vocal range. Here are a few of them compiled in a list to help you get started with your journey to extend your vocal range further than your present range.
Warm-Up: Before anything, it is essential to have a proper warm-up regime. Have the proper warm-up exercises before diving into the process, proper breathing exercises constituents the first of the warm-up exercises for the vocal practice or performance.
Follow Scales: It is highly-recommended going through the scales, the thirds, and fourths. You should practice the scales whenever you get the time, this makes for a better understanding and helps your vocal have a better grasp of the scales. All types of scales that go through your scales should be practiced properly and with complete persistence if you don’t get some of them right at first.
Hum: Try to hum along to the scales, this helps extend the vocal range as well. This exercise has helped a lot when it comes to tackling the higher pitched notes along the scale. Although not all professional will recommend this exercise in the regular practice list but this has proved to be successful for many people in the field.
Sing it right: Though it won’t be possible right off the bat but keep practicing and try to sing it right. Follow standard procedures, be sure to breathe with the diaphragm and use your breathing to support your breathing. Proper breathing exercises will help you climb this summit.
Push boundaries gradually: "Rome wasn’t built in a day". This goes for all things in life, like everything, you’ll get better at the trade. Persistence is the key to everything. Follow the steps and follow them every day and eventually, you’ll get the hang of it.
