The Latest From Isuzu Dealers; Perth Drivers Could More Oomph
When visiting Isuzu dealerships, Perth drivers could be in for a pleasant surprise in the near future. The company has hinted that they may have something in store to address "under stressed" diesel models by keeping the bigger engines in the face lifted range. The local arm has hinted that there is performance potential lurking in the 3.0 litre engine offered in the D-Max Ute and MU-X SUV.
Additional Torque:
Speaking recently, PR and sponsorship manager for Isuzu Ute Australia, Mark Harman said that there are key factors in the company’s decision to ignore the overseas smaller engine options. During the development of the refreshed D-Max and MU-X, the extra torque and more performance potential offered with the turbo diesel 3.0 litre engine were major considerations when assessing the drivetrain options. Harman stated that the current package "is very capable" right now and is "under strung" if anything. He confirmed that the engine is under stressed with lower outputs that offers great potential. The engine has a quite low compression ratio and turbo boost pressure that could offer incredible numbers.
The company made the decision to take this engine onwards of 2017 due to the fact that Isuzu is convinced that there are more development opportunities for this engine. This should end speculation that has been making the rounds about whether we would see the 1.9 and 2.5 litre units that have been teased by Isuzu Motors for other markets.
How the Engine Stacks Up:
The current top of the range Ford Ranger Wildtrak offers 147 kW power and 470 Nm torque. The VW V6 Amarok offers 165kW/550Nm, and the Hilux SR5 provides 130kW/450Nm. There is also a more powerful Ranger Raptor on the cards from Ford in the coming months. These are impressive numbers, and Isuzu has been asked whether the revised D-Max would be able to compete with these more expensive rivals. Although he refused to be drawn into answering this question, Mr. Harman did confirm that Isuzu is watching this segment "closely." He did suggest that there is a possibility of further special edition models but refused to commit to offering a boosted truck as a full time model. Harman said that there is currently a few limited editions in the range, but they are introduced in limited numbers and sell out quickly; "a good problem" for the brand to have. The issue was left on a cryptic note with Mr. Harman saying that we may see further special editions, but we will need to "watch this space."
