The Stunning Marvel – Bandra-Worli Sea Link

The Bandra Worli Sea Link was conceptualized in the late 90s to be India’s first eight-lane, cable-stayed freeway over the open sea.

Bandra Worli Sea Link is the first and the longest sea link bridge in India. It is an 8-lane cable-stayed bridge, spanning about 5600 meters in length and towering to a height of 126 meters. The final costs ballooned to Rs 16.5 billion from Rs 13.06 billion, the material used in the construction project had to meet quality regulations and standards considering an average daily traffic of 37,500 vehicles.

  • It was not an easy job, even for the world-renowned architect, Seshadri Srinivas.

Seshadri Srinivas, the designer of the sea link has not only designed Mumbai’s JJ flyover, but also the Jamarat Bridge in Mecca. Yet, it took him three attempts to finalize the design for the architectural marvel, a saviour for Mumbaikars.

  • It has solved the city’s traffic problem to a miraculous extent

The sea-link reduces travel time between Bandra and Worli during peak hours from 60–90 minutes to 10minutes. Quite unbelievable, right?

  • It’s heavier than your imagination

The long-awaited Bandra-Worli sea link, seen as an engineering marvel, weighs equivalent to that of 50,000 African elephants.

  • With great infrastructures comes great usage of electricity

The cost of illuminating the bridge was Rs. 9 crores! It consumes 1,000 KW power a day, enough to fulfil the need of electricity of 100 households.

After almost 8 years of its existence, it has now become hard for the city to imagine a life without it.

Even though it runs at supremely high costs, the amount of time it saves for every daily commuter makes the expenditure worth it.
