Venice airport transfers with pets: particularities

Author: Lisa Jeeves

To many people, if not most, a pet is more than just an animal - it is a part of the family. There is a reason the expression ‘pet owner’ was changed to ‘pet parent’, as each generation seems to treat their four-legged domestic companions more and more like their own children.

Travel agents have twigged onto this, and acted accordingly. Where before a traveller would be hard-pressed to find tourist accommodation that allowed any kind of pet whatsoever, nowadays it is not that hard to come across pet-friendly hotels, where the four-legged guests are treated with just as much respect as the two-legged ones.

Venice, for instance, is an excellent city in this regard. Many of the more popular establishments in the city centre are pet-friendly, which means travellers need not have any qualms about bringing Rover or Mr. Tibbles with them on their relaxation break.

There is, however, one thing they should take into account, and that is Venice airport transfers. Because of the very particular nature of the shuttles that take tourists from Marco Polo Airport to the water city, it might be best for tourists to give some thought to whether or not their pet would cause disturbances to their transfer. Below are only a couple of instances in which a dog or cat could complicate the process of getting from the airport to the centre of the City of Canals.

Size Matters

As most tourists will be aware by now, the vast majority of Venice airport transfers are made through what are commonly known as ‘water taxis’ – speedboat-type shuttle vessels that take newly-arrived international guests to the city centre through expert navigation of the famous canals. And while these boats come in different sizes to accommodate for all sorts of party sizes and luggage needs, space is nevertheless limited, which could cause a problem for pet parents with larger furred friends.

In fact, while carrying a cat or modest-sized dog onto one of these boats will not pose too much of a problem, larger breeds of dogs may not be able to fit into even the water taxis, forcing owners to devise an alternative way of reaching the city. And with public transportation not exactly conducive to the transportation of large animals, either, this alternate method could end up involving quite a bit of walking. Owners of larger dogs or other bulky pets should therefore check that their four-legged friend can be carried in one of these water taxis before booking.

Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is another problem that could affect pets during Venice airport transfers, and one they share with children, making life potentially difficult for families travelling with both. Usually, a couple of sea-sickness pills will take care of this particular difficulty, but pets with more sensitive dispositions could well become noisy or messy with the motion of the boat over water. Tourists arriving to the water city with their pets should therefore be wary of this also.

In short, while by no means impossible, the task of travelling into the city with pets should be approached with caution, if only due to the unusual nature of Venice airport transfers.
