Why the name?

The name Hatton garden has originated from Sir Christopher Hatton, who acquired the land here from the bishops of Ely in the 1570s. Hatton was both knighted and made chancellor by Elizabeth I, who had originally been attracted to him by his graceful dancing at a ball and nicknamed as ‘the dancing chancellor’.

Since the 1870, Hatton garden has been known as London’s jewellery quarter and the centre of the UK diamond trade. As recorded in 1895, there were over 100 diamond merchants and traders operating from the area. In 1910, Hatton garden as recognised as largest jewellery quarter in the UK with over 200 jewellery business and workshops. With Debeers establishing their premises in 1930, Hatton Garden Jewellery business has boomed. Today, there are over 300 business in jewellery industry including Hatton Garden engagement rings, wedding ringsand all fine jewellery selling business.

Hatton Garden Heist

Jewellery quarter is equally popular with some of largest Heists in UK history. Some of most media-mentioned heists including July 1993 heist in Graff workshop of £7 million was then the London’s biggest gem heist. After 18 years in April 2015 over easter weekend, largest heist ever in UK history is recorded. A group of criminals drilled into the vault of Hatton garden safe deposit and carried away diamonds and jewellery worth over £200 million.

The Hatton garden is located within the area bordered by Clerkenwell Road, Grays Road, Holborn and Farringdon Road. With the area located in central london, it is accessible from any parts of Greater London and the surrounding boroughs. Chancery Lane and Farringdon are the nearest tube stations.
