The Green philosophy and its practices has a longer history within the context of the modern world than many people believe, and its character has changed over time. If you have any interest in eco-friendly values (and practices, then continue to read. However, let’s begin with a common definition of environmentalism: "Environmentalists advocate sustainable management of resources and the stewardship of the environment through changes in public policy and individual behavior. In its recognition of humanity as a participant in ecosystems, the movement is focused on health, ecology and human rights." Organizations like the Sierra Club embody this definition by taking actions to protect the environment and educate the general public.

As industry, technology and synthesized products expanded, the American people experienced a division in beliefs and values when it came to natural resources. With the Wilderness Act, which became a law in 1964, and the inception of the Environmental Protection Agency, environmentalism joined the civil rights movement, the anti-war movement, the artistic explosion, the political upheaval and the social rebellion of the late 60’s and early 70’s. One could say that all of these changes were a source of inspiration for the development of the Green Movement. Richard Nixon passed the Clean Air Act in 1970, and as the years passed, more legislation was introduced to deal with the increase of deliberate corporate pollution and ecological tragedies, like nuclear disasters and oil-spills.

As the 21st century rapidly approached, the chasm between environmentalism and the corporate sector got wider, leading to extreme attitudes on both sides. This often led to media distortions and public denial of ecological dangers, producing a rift with the American people. The Environmental Protection Agency was seriously criticized for interfering with economic growth and for being anti-capitalist with too much power to regulate. With radical changes in weather patterns across the world, an increase in natural disasters, and other disastrous events like 9/11, even some conservative scientists began to cry out for common sense. Al Gore’s motion picture An Inconvenient Truth took this national debate to an international stage, which made words like global warming and climate change part of common daily usage.

One of the Internet’s biggest assets is how one can discover an endless amount of information. Much of it is incorrect or incomplete, of course, but it still educates billons of people with facts and knowledge. One piece of knowledge is how people all over the world are now aware that not only are natural resources more polluted than ever but they’re more depleted as well, as the world’s population continues to increase. In response to these changes, the Green Movement has expanded dramatically on both a global and a personal level. Smaller companies and even some larger corporations are investing Green values and practices into their operations. There’s even a Green stock market called the SRI & Sustainable Indexes. So, do yourself and the world a big favor by buying and being eco-friendly furniture.
