The Subaru Outback 3.6R v The Holden Calais-V Tourer
The Subaru Outback 3.6R is the latest release to feed the current Aussie obsession with all things off road. This is a hotly contested car segment that has dominated Australian car sales for a few years now, and there are no signs that this is going to abate any time soon. In order to feed this need car manufacturers worldwide have sent their best SUVs here and the Holden Calais-V Tourer is the homegrown contender. Let’s take a quick look at these two SUVs and see what they have to offer.
Is it a Wagon or SUV?
Both of these vehicles could almost be considered as traditional wagons in the past. They are not what you would consider when thinking about a full on mainstream SUV. Think of them more as high riding wagons with off roading capabilities and you are getting closer to their true nature. These vehicles are designed for those weekend camping trips and trips to the beach. A more rugged station wagon with better visibility, added versatility and some (limited in some cases) off roading functionality.
Taking a Surface Look
This is not a perfect match in terms of pricing; the Holden Calais-V Tourer is a more expensive vehicle when on road costs are added. Both vehicles sit at the pinnacle of their respective ranges, and it would be natural to expect premium features aplenty. The Outback 3.6R excels here compared to the Calais-V Tourer, but a lower spec version, the Calais-V (sans Tourer) is available for a significantly lower outlay.
Both of these vehicles are powered by 3.6L six cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engines. The Holden sticks with a more conventional V6 layout that many SUV drivers may instantly recognise. Subaru has taken a different approach their power plant is horizontally mounted, this is a feature seen on all Subaru cars, and it’s virtually a brand trademark.
The Equipment Levels
The Subaru Outback 3.6R has plenty of equipment onboard, such as electrically adjustable heated leather seats, dual zone climate control, a front sunroof, adaptive cruise control, steering responsive LED headlights, an auto dimming mirror, push button start, a powered tailgate and 18" alloy wheels. The Calais-V Tourer has some of these features, but it adds a panoramic roof and massaging functions for the driver's seat.
