Understanding the concept of Ring Sawing

Author: John Hrq

If you are looking for some kind of cutting job or sawing work done for you, it is better to understand various types of machines and tools used for this process. If you are doing this on your own, you will have better hold on how to use them; but if you are hiring a firm, this understanding will help you choose better.

Ring sawing is one of the types used by these firms and companies. Technically, a ring saw is a form of bandsaw but the band is rigid and not flexible. This rigidity is imparted by making the band circular, while in the regular bandsaw, the band has straight runs between 2-3 guide wheels.

One major difference you will notice in this type of sawing machine is that the blades are abrasive and not toothed. To impart brittleness to this abrasive material and also to avoid bending of these blades, the band is made circular. Constant radius of the circular band helps in avoiding any type of flexure or bending of the blades.

To understand the usage of these types of machines, you need to understand the type of material used for abrasive process. Usually, the steel band or ring is coated with a diamond abrasive and is attached with the help of nickel electroplating. These machines are often used for art glass, mineralogy, and sawing ceramic tiles.

The abrasive cuts can’t be used on thick materials like other bandsaw machines can do. This is why ring sawing is usually used for mineralogy or slabbing processes. Sometimes, a wire is used as the band. These types of ring saws are coated with abrasive material on all the sides resulting in the cuts on all the sides.

The construction of ring sawing machines often depends on the makers. Sometimes, they offer blades just like used in bandaws, though the blades in the ringsaws are made more rigid and less flexible thus giving more accurate cut. Some of the makers impart a special feature whereby a ringsaw can cut materials backward, forward and also from the sides.

It should be noticed that ring saws do not have the straight run of blade and also the blades are not supported by the wheels as they are in the bandsaws; meaning that excessive pressure on the thin blades of a ringsaw may damage the machine. Afterall, ringsaws are fragile than the regular bandsaw machines.

As you know, cutting or abrasive operations produce a lot of heat; water cooling system is needed to evaporate the heat. Most of the ringsaws are designed to support this type of mechanism. These are fitting with water pumps, drip feeds and catch trays to facilitate this process.

Now that you know so much about ringsaws and machines used for various types of operations, you can employ this understanding while working on your own or while hiring an agency or a firm to do the job for you. Choose wisely and with better knowledge of the product and process involved.
