Traditional Dental Braces vs. Invisalign

Author: John Braine

Today’s orthodontic treatment options are much more discreet than in years past. Gone are the days of bulky braces being the only path to straight teeth. Today’s orthodontic appliances can get you a beautiful smile in a fraction of the time of previous models and with much less hassle.

The two most popular orthodontic treatments administered by orthodontists near you are traditional wire-and-bracket braces and Invisalign clear liners. Here at Ornella Orthodontics in Cincinnati, Ohio, we have experience in the complete range of dental services. We want to help you decide which of these two options is the better fit to help you reach your perfect smile.

Traditional Dental Braces

Traditional braces consist of metal brackets cemented to each tooth and connected by a thin wire called an archwire, with elastic bands to secure them. Braces are used to correct conditions such as protrusions, alignment issues, crowded teeth, and irregular spacing. Brackets and elastic bands come in a variety of colors and styles.

Normally traditional braces take about 10 to 20 minutes to place, and follow-up appointments are required every three to ten weeks. You will probably feel some soreness and mild discomfort after your braces have been adjusted. Treatment can last between 6 months to correct minor issues and 2+ years for major alignment problems. Usually, your orthodontist will require you to wear a plastic retainer for a while after braces are removed to help teeth maintain their shape.

Traditional dental braces are not recommended for children under the age of 8, as their mouths have not yet finished developing. Older children, teens, and adults all may be candidates for treatment with braces, depending on their orthodontist’s evaluation.

Invisalign

Invisalign is a system of clear plastic liners that gradually move the teeth into better alignment. It is considered an alternative treatment to braces. Invisalign can be used to correct widely spaced teeth, crowded teeth, simple bite problems, and mild relapse after treatment with braces. Invisalign braces are accurate for mid-age people wearers looking for a solution that integrates easily into their everyday lives.

Many people are attracted to treatment with Invisalign because they are clear and discreet. Invisalign is removable, and you can take them out to eat, drink, and perform oral hygiene. It is recommended to wear the liners for at least 20 hours per day to benefit fully from the treatment. You’ll have to see the orthodontist every four to six weeks. At these follow-up visits, you will receive your next set of custom liners. Treatment time varies, but most adults finish within a year.

Invisalign is ideal for adults and teenagers with less serious alignment issues. For those with simple orthodontic problems, Invisalign Express can produce desired results in less time and for a lower cost than traditional Invisalign treatment.

Of course, the only way to determine which orthodontic treatment is right for you is to receive a personalized dental consultation. Don’t wait another day to start achieving your perfect smile!
