Housecleaning Tips Every Cat Parent Must Know

Author: Stephanie Cooper

Every cat owner knows that as long as their feline is happy, the house will stay in order, well sort of. You can't escape from the hairs on the upholstery and the occasional furball. However, as long as you know how to properly maintain your house, everything will be all right. We have gathered a few cleaning tips that will help cat parents to provide their four-legged companions with a tidy and comfortable home environment.

How to Clean a Multi-Cat Home

Often you start with one purring adorable kitten, and somehow in a year, you have at least two other pets in the home. That is the secret power of felines - you can't resist them. But having more cats means you have to put a double effort in the cleaning process. It is a big myth that if you have more than one cat, your house is a smelly, unclean and unpleasant place. Let's bust it with the following cleaning tips:

  • Get a couple of litter boxes and place a plastic rug under them. This way it will be easier to clean any sand that has fallen out. Remember changing the litter boxes every day.
  • Reduce the number of fluffy carpets in your home. They can gather a lot of hairs and from a point - it is impossible to properly hoover them.
  • Buy an enzyme-based pet odour. It is great for neutralising all nasty smells, and it's pet-friendly.
  • Carrying and Cleaning

If you care properly for your pets, you will have less to clean around the house. Sounds strange but it is true. Here are some things you must never forget:

  • Make sure to neuter your house cats when they come of age. This is important for various reasons:
  • Health: both female and male cats can develop various illnesses as a result of the inability to breed regularly.
  • Control of the population: Be e responsible pet parent and don't breed your animals if you want another kitty just go to your local shelter and adopt.
  • Cleaning problems: Male cats tend to mark their territory and trust us on this one, the smell can bring tears into your eyes.
  • Grooming your cat regardless of its breed is very important. Not only it will spare you the long hours of wiping the upholstery, but it will make your pet feel comfortable.
  • Choose the pet food carefully as some low-quality dry foods can create health problems like vomiting, frequent urination or can even cause your cat to pee blood. Don't feed males only with kibble as it may provoke serious liver and kidney problems. The healthier your cat eats, the less smelly the litter box thus your house will appear cleaner.
  • Do not cut your cat's claws. This is extremely painful for the animal, and no vet will ever advise you to do it. If you want to keep your upholstery intact just buy cat scratchers. And let's face it; some compromises must be made from time to time.
  • If you live in an apartment in a big city like London, make sure to secure your windows and terraces. You don't want your pet to fall. You can use a thin net, and the best part is it will stop the dirt from the outside getting in.
  • Basic Cleaning Advice

Let's imagine the following situation: you own a beautiful apartment in the British capital and have decided its time to introduce it to an adorable fluffy kitty. You have never owned a pet and have no clue how to properly clean your London home. For beginner cat parents we have made a checklist with all your weekly tiding chores:

  • Make sure all the cleaning detergents you buy from now on are pet-friendly.
  • Wipe all surfaces with a damp microfibre cloth - this way you can gather the hairs easily.
  • Use rubber gloves or a squeegee to clean upholstery.
  • Vacuum and mop the floors every other day or in the worst case once a week.
  • Buy blankets and couch covers - they will save your upholstery. Wash them every week, and you won't have any pet hair problems.
  • If you see a mess-clean it. Stains from vomit or pee can be hard to clean once they dry out.
  • Having a cat is more or less the same as having a toddler. You need to regularly clean the house, wake early to feed it, and nothing can replace the joy of snuggling with it.
