Mouawad Diamonds. The Most Stunning Diamond Collection

Author: Lisa Jeeves

Lebanese diamond investor Robert Mouawad is one of the world’s top ten billionaire diamond owners. Since the 1970s Mouawad has progressively become one of the most significant players in the diamond industry and is personally responsible for some of the highest recorded diamond prices achieved in years. The stunning diamond collection of the Mouawad family gives Mr Mouawad a net worth of $1 billion and has made him the happy owner of quite a few world famous and record-breaking diamonds.

The Mouawad family has been in the jewellery business since the 1890s and Robert was the catalyst behind its successful expansion from Saudi Arabia to Europe, Asia and North America. Currently the existing company is based in Geneva and has been responsible for the purchase of many notable diamonds since its establishment in the 1970s.

Prized Possessions

In 1990 Mouawad purchased a 101.84 carat diamond at Sotheby’s for $12.76 million. ‘The Mouawad Splendour’, as it has come to be known, made it to the Guinness World Book of Records at the time for being the most expensive single pear-shaped diamond. This stunning diamond was also featured on Victoria’s Secret Fantasy bra in 2005. The Mouawad jewellery company has personally designed a number of these multi-million dollar Fantasy bras for the fashion company and many have showcased magnificent diamonds from the Mouawad collection.

Other purchases have included the 135.92 carat Queen of Holland diamond originally owned by Elizabeth Taylor. Mr Mouawad once commented that, "Each diamond is unique and has personality traits, some more appealing than others. The whiteness or fancy colour, the size, the clarity, the cut, and the immortal character, are all factors that contribute to the overall beauty of a stone. But it is the human touch that unveils its beauty. In its rough state it hides its true potential value. Also, the true historical value of a gem, from its formation to its birth on the earth's surface, and the many lives it has affected, are all intangibles that add to its mystique".

Mouawad has featured frequently in the Guinness Book of World Records and most recently with the award for the world’s most valuable necklace. The ‘Mouawad L’Incomparable Diamond Necklace’ is valued at $55 million and features the world’s largest internally flawless diamond. This stunning diamond, known as the Incomparable diamond, is an amazing 407.48 carats.

Philanthropic Endeavours The Mouawad family’s stunning diamond collection is simply one-of-a-kind. Although their primary interest is their jewellery business they also recognize the value and need for sharing these gems with the world. In 2001 the family was instrumental in assembling the largest diamond exhibition in the world, held in Paris and simply titled ‘Diamonds’. The unprecedented exhibition showcased period jewellery, world famous stones and centuries of history, and was launched with a star-studded party attended by celebrities, dignitaries and Jacques Chirac, the President of France at the time.

It could be claimed that the Mouawad family are the ambassadors of diamonds for the world. Their successful business model has been fuelled by their love and passion for the stunning diamond and the artistic excellence and craftsmanship behind the designs. They have strived to bring the beauty of diamonds to the world at large and have certainly made quite a profit along the way.
