Four Amalfi Towns Not to Be Missed

Staying on the coast in one of the many wonderful Amalfi villas available to rent is a great way to discover this beautiful region; there is so much here to offer the discerning traveller. From the cliff top villages teetering high above the stunning coastline and the endless lines of terraces laden with delicious lemons, olives and almonds, to the grand villas and palaces and the exclusive shopping opportunities, this region of Italy has something for everyone. Overlooking the Salerno Gulf the area is renowned for its stunning natural landscape and its centuries of art, history and culture.

Four Must See Towns

The advantage of staying in one of the many Amalfi villas is that you can explore at your leisure. There is an excellent public transport system or you could hire a car and be completely independent.

Amalfi

The main town dates back to Roman times, and has had a prosperous history due to its strategic geographical position, which also gave rise to a huge maritime success. Ever since then, this little port has remained an important attraction for tourists who come to explore the cobbled streets, soak up the lively atmosphere, and visit the town’s impressive cathedral.

Positano

Positano is one of the most famous towns on this part of the coast, and there is no denying its beauty. Extremely photogenic, the crystal waters over which Positano looks has some very attractive beaches, visited by droves in the summer. On a more cultural note, Positano has a lovely church with a tiled dome and Saracen towers, which is definitely worth a visit. Retail aficionados will love this little shopping haven, too. Full of independent workshops selling leather sandals and all manner of other local crafts, Positano is also home to some exclusive boutiques. The town is synonymous with fabulous gastronomy, and you should take the opportunity to taste the delicious Porta Positanese, the local almond cake.

Atrani

For a more local experience head to Atrani, the tiny fishing village just up the coast a ways. The tiny church of San Salvatore lies at the village centre, and the village clings to the mountainside, offering better and better views of the coastline below the further you rise. Many of the Amalfi villas to rent are located close to Atrani, and some are within walking distance along the coastal path.

Praiano

Finally, Praiano, the little port that was once the place merchants landed with their ships to trade with the locals, is a charming town to visit. This town has a tranquil atmosphere and is a lovely place to escape the crowds and enjoy some rest and relaxation. Packed with little alleyways decorated with votive altars and staircases that climb through the town up the mountainside, Praiano was once the favourite holiday destination of the aristocracy of the region. Again, the church is the main feature, but make sure you visit the Torre a Mare (the Tower of the Sea) as well, to appreciate the breathtaking views.
