All About Air Filters

Filters evolved in response to people’s reaction to contaminants and allergens such as pollen, animal fur, dust and spores. Air Filters clean up to 99% of airborne particles and are one of the advanced ways to ensure that only clean air is distributed in the particular setting. As soon as the air passes through an Air Filter, the pre-filter traps majority of large particles. The particles that are too small to be trapped in the pre-filter and charge positively are attracted to negatively charged plates.

Air Filters of many types and materials are manufactured on a large scale to meet a number of industrial and commercial requirements for clean air. Commercial Filters come in different variants that are typically based on how they remove suspended particles from the air. The most commonly sought-after category of Air Filter includes HVAC Filters, that consist of porous beds of plastic fibers or resin bonded glass. The fibers collect dust and purify the air.

Types Of HVAC Filters

  • Washable Filter: Although it is advisable to discard clogged up filtering devices, you can always buy a washable one. The only problem with these types of filters is that they have an extremely low Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV). This allows contaminants such as bacteria and fungus to escape and circulate in the house.
  • Fiberglass Filter: Manufactured using medium to heavy cardboard frame with layered fiberglass reinforced with metal mesh, this filter is ideal for most of the filtering applications.
  • Electrostatic Filters: These filters create a self-generating electric charge that helps in collecting dust particles. These filters are manufactured using multiple layers of polypropylene media or galvanized frame or cardboard frame.

HEPA Filters – Another commonly used category of Air Filters includes High-Efficiency Particulate Absorption (HEPA) Air Filters. When these filters were first developed they were primarily installed in hospitals to prevent the contamination of airborne bacteria and thus give support to health facilities. These filters were fitted with UV rays that were designed to kill any remaining bacteria that remained attached to the filter.

Today, the use of HEPA Filters is not just restricted to medical facilities but has extended to automotive industry, manufacturing unit, factories and even household. Modern-day HEPA Filter Air Cleaners are widely used for reducing air contaminants such as dust, pollen and other irritants that may cause allergy. They are easy to operate and can be fitted in any air conditioning system, without the need to replace anything or incur any extra cost.
