Most pests that are found at home can be categorized into bugs and insects while rodents and other wildlife animals seldom visit our houses only during rainy seasons to look for food. These tiny pests are real nuisance to a human living. They fly, crawl, and run around our homes. Examples of these are wood bugs, weevils, bed bugs, pill bugs, and other insects.

There also bugs that eat wood. Aside from the devastating termites, there are a lot of types of wood eating bugs: twig girdler, weevils, carpenter worms, bark beetles, pine seed bugs, wheely bugs and so on. These bugs are considered as secondary invaders because they dwell in dead woods such as houses which are made of manufactured woods.

You can simply identify a wheely bug over a weevil. By just looking at those wood bugs pictures, you can readily spot how they are different from each other. You can browse more pictures on the internet. However, it is very important to know how they are different from each other in terms of attitude; how they live, how they feed, how they manage their colonies, and so on. A little description of some of the common house pests will be presented on the following paragraphs.

Bed Bug

According to the Research, these parasites are caused by bat or bird bugs living in buildings where birds and bats dwell. They are brought at homes through infested furniture, luggage, personal belongings, and so on. They can also travel through electrical wiring, plumbing and adjoining walls.

Although they are not harmful to the wood, they feed on human blood to live. They only feed on blood when their hosts are asleep and it would take 5 – 10 minutes to complete its meal. Bed bugs can’t transmit diseases but severe scratching from itches can cause cuts and lesions which can lead to infections.

Observe your body after waking up. You are attacked by bed bugs if you found red, itchy bug bites in your body. Bed bugs have a pattern of 3 bites in a line. Also, check your house regularly for bed bug infestation. They mostly hide in crevices, mattresses, and voids on walls.

Pill Bug

They are associated to bugs but they actually belong to the subphylum Crustacea which are closely related to shrimps and crayfishes. They are the only crustacean that can live on land for their entire life. They have a life span of two years. You can easily identify pill bugs because they curl up when they are disturbed or threatened.

They are mostly found in damp areas. If they enter a building without enough moisture, they will dry up and die. They are considered as scavengers and they feed on live and dead plants and insects, as well as, animal debris. They even eat their own feces.

Female pill bugs carry their eggs in a pouch called marsupium. It is formed by their overlapping thoracic plates underside their bodies. The eggs will stay on the pouch until the eggs are hatched. The hatched pill bugs will stay for an additional several days on the pouch before their mother will let them explore the world on their own.

Weevil

Weevils are actually beetles but are misidentified as bugs. They are about 1/8" up to 1" depending on the species. They are very slender and have an oval-shaped body while their color ranges from dark brown to black.

Weevils feed on wood on their larvae stage until they become adults. They can cause extensive damages. They are mostly found on farms, fields, and orchards. However, some species are considered as structural pests. Structural weevils are seasonal. Some weevils invade during fall, hide during winter and migrate on the spring. They feed on tree trunks, ornamental plants, and many more at homes.

Weevils lay their eggs near the host plant; when these eggs are hatched, the larvae burrows beneath the ground and feed on the plant’s roots in order to sustain life. Most larvae spend their time beneath and emerge on the surface as adults.

There are a lot more. These are just some of the common pests that are found at home. They may not be very destructive but their presence will surely disturb you.
