Types of Powder Processing Machinery

Author: Oliver Parkes

Powder processing, also known as particle processing, is the act of mixing, sifting, grinding, drying or compacting particles in order to create a finished product. They are commonly used to efficiently manufacture cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, foodstuffs and raw materials amongst many other things.

It is important that the correct machinery is used to process the powder, as the wrong equipment or settings could damage the finished product.

With so many different powder processing machines available to buy it can be tough to know what's what. This article takes a look at some of the most popular items of powder processing machinery and it explains what their benefits are.

Powder Mixing Machinery

Mixing equipment is designed to combine several different powders in order to create a well-blended mixture. When choosing a powder mixer you will need to consider the properties of the feed materials, production environment, energy efficiency rating and the requirements for the final product.

Powder mixing equipment will generally come in two types: batch mixing or continuous mixing. Within these categories there are conical screw mixers, ribbon screw mixers, high shear mixers, conical paddle mixers, high impact mixers, continuous modular mixers, high shear mixers and high speed paddle mixers.

Powder Drying Machinery

Industrial powder dryer machines are able to safely reduce the moisture content of a powder mixture without damaging the final product. As with powder mixers, there are two main types of powder dryers: batch dryers and continuous dryers.

Batch dryers are suitable if you have smaller batches of powders that need to be individually blended, or if you are short for space within the workplace. Batch mix dryers can include active freeze dryers, conical screw dryers, vertical ribbon dryers and vertical paddle dryers.

Continuous drying is more suited to companies that require a large volume of powders to be dried, however these machines can be rather bulky and often require a lot of floor space. The main types of continuous powder dryers are flash dryers, fluid bed dryers, disc dryers and paddle dryers.

Some retailers will let you test out the dryers and mixers to check out what types may be the most efficient for the type of powders that you need to process.

If you are unsure about what type of powder processing machinery you may need, then you can speak to a specialist who will listen to your requirements in order to recommend the best equipment for your needs. Good luck.
