Health Effects of Potassium Bromide
Potassium bromide is an anticovulsant medication used for effective treatment of seizures. Initially used as sedative for the treatment of epilepsy in humans, it is now rarely used as it is replaced by many more highly effective drugs. But it still finds its use in medications for curing seizures in dogs. This medication can have side effects, but these negatives effects are often overshadowed by its advantages. This article highlights the health effects of Potassium bromide.
Preparation
Traditionally, potassium bromide was manufactured from the reaction of potassium carbonate with a bromide of iron.

Potassium Bromide In Veterinary Use
Potassium Bromide acts as an effective medication for treatment of seizures in dogs. Seizure activities are caused by high level of electrical activities in brain tissues. The electrical activity is encouraged by high levels of chloride. The bromide ions in potassium bromide fight off chloride in brain tissues. These ions decrease chloride level in central nervous system which helps in curing seizure. Potassium bromide is also used to treat seizure in cats and dogs. But, due to side effects, it is rarely used to treat cats. Usually used for first-time epileptics, it is often combined with Phenobarbital.
Its Usage
Typically directed orally, Potassium bromide is available in both solution and capsule form. It is important to take the dose at the same time every day, without skipping. Skipping a dose may result in major seizure. To minimize the side effects associated with potassium bromide, this medication is recommended to be consumed with food and water.
Side Effects Of Potassium Bromide
Potassium bromide is an effective medication, but its negative effects cannot be ignored. The most common side effects are vomiting, loss of appetite, drowsiness and diarrhea. Skin rashes may develop in dogs, while in cats a respiratory condition like asthma may develop. Other severe side-effects include twitching, staggering, muscle pain and problems in limbs. A veterinarian should be contacted immediately if any of these symptoms are observed.
