Are You One Of These Four Types Of Travelers?

Author: Neil White

Most of us go traveling with the people we love but it doesn't always turn out to be a great holiday. The reason is that we have different personalities, meaning we'll also have different travel goals. In other words, you can't really enjoy a holiday if you made plans with someone who likes simply lying on the same beach, reading a book and getting up late while you're an early bird who enjoys wondering around the new place, exploring the streets and culture.

Our personalities differ in so many things and they reflect on how we see traveling and what goals we have when we travel. Everybody travels for a different reason, depending on their personal features but also on the current mood and situation they are in.

So, the point is that you'll have the best time with someone who shares your travel goals. However, you first need to identify what type of traveler you are. Although there are several subcategories, we can all be grouped into one of the 4 general types of traveler. Read about each one of them and see which one sounds like you the most.

1.The carefree backpacker

This person makes their planes in the spur of the moment without worrying too much about the budget. They enjoy meeting new people, trying out new things, tasting local cuisine, explore new destinations as much as possible and doesn't care too much about the accommodation because they carry their sleeping bag. They travel light but they also travel far. They travel a lot by hitchhiking and they don't mind being invited to a local's home.

They don't care about conventional rules and they try to indulge themselves in any way possible. If they see an opportunity - they will reach for it. In other words, if someone asks them to go bungee jumping or wandering into a deep forest to explore - they will say yes in a split of a second. In essence, new experiences are the main reason why they travel. They recharge by expanding their horizons and testing their limits. And lastly, they are easily recognizable by their backpack - hence the name.

2. The careful planner

A careful planner doesn't want to rely on sheer luck when it comes to traveling. This person doesn't travel very often, maybe once or twice a year, but when they do, they really do their homework. Most of the time, they travel in a group or with family. Before they go on the trip, they will read tens of blogs, download travel guides and consult several travel agents before they make their final decision on the destination. In other words, they want to be sure they will make the best choice possible. And when they start planning the trip, it will be planned to the smallest detail because they don't want to leave anything to chance. They will do research on the sites they will explore, restaurants to eat in and museums and art galleries to visit.

As their main goal is to have a hassle-free holiday, it also means that these travelers will usually opt for popular holiday destinations that have been already reviewed by many as great. Some of these destinations include Mediterranean countries like Italy, Greece, and Spain, as well as France and Switzerland when it comes to skiing. In essence, this type of traveler enjoys a well-planned, predictable holiday.

3. The unconventional explorer

The unconventional explorer is similar to the backpacker but only in terms of wanting to soak up the local culture. Explorers don't want to waste time visiting conventional touristic sites and waste time in the museum, looking at lifeless art. They want to become one with the local people, customs and spirit. They are more likely to rent kids scooters so that they can move through the place quickly and freely, feeling what that place is really about. They are even eager to meet locals to get a better insight into their culture and traditions, so they will be more likely to eat in small family-owned restaurants than to go to popular restaurants crowded with only tourists.

They are also more likely to go after unexplored places which will enrich their soul. In other words, the unconventional explorer will travel not only to discover the new destination but also to discover themselves. They will learn something about themselves, too, through the unexpected situations they come across. Adventure is what drives them.

4. The frequent weekend traveler

This type of traveler is usually financially stable and comfortable with spending on trips frequently because they value being able to get away somewhere for the weekend. Their main characteristic is that they don't need to travel far (they frequently visit places close to their home) to have wonderful experiences and recharge.

So, it's very easy for them to embrace every opportunity for traveling because a weekend is enough for them to get away from the routine and see something new. Sometimes they will even stick the boundaries of their cities if they believe there are areas they still haven't got to explore. Any chance to have a long weekend due to a public holiday won't be missed by them.

Final words

Sometimes we can abandon our usual ways and do something out of the ordinary. For example, a careful planner will wish to try out a more spontaneous holiday if they are sick of others telling them to relax a bit. A backpacker may want to a break from the crazy adventures and simply be and enjoy in one destination, having a laid-back holiday for once.

However, in general, we are mostly one type of traveler than any other. So, if we want to fully enjoy our holiday and make the best of it, we should travel with people similar to us. Of course, you don't have to look for the exact same type of traveler but you should at least find someone whose views of traveling match with yours in most points.
