Facts & Features Manual: Gear shapers!

Author: Industrial Manual

Edwin R. Fellows was an American producer and entrepreneur from Torrington, Connecticut who styled and manufactured a innovative type of gear shaper in 1896 and, with the help of James Hartness as mentor, he left the Jones & Lamson Machine Label to co-found the Fellows Gear Shaper Company in Springfield, Vermont, which was one of the promoting firms in the gear-shaping segment of the machine tool industry. Fellows machines made an important contribution to the mass production of fruitful and authentic gear transmissions for the freshly generated automotive industry. The primitive method of gear cutting is mounting a gear blank in a shaper and using a tool shaped in the profile of the part to be cut. This procedure also works for cutting internal flexible strip. Another is a U-shaped cutter that is used in a gear shaper machine. It is usually when a cutter that looks alike to a gear cuts a gear blank. The cutter and the blank must have a moving axis parallel to each other. This procedure works well for small and big production runs.

There is only one commercial machine on the market that is adapted to the cutting of one piece stepped and shoulder gears and that is Fellows Gear Shaper. Practically every truck manufacturer uses the gear shaper for finishing transmission gears. It represents the only successful and practical method for machining this type of gear.

There are many Gear shapers models, namely- 6-10 C-1 Series,6-10 B-1 Series, 16-16/16-36/16-56 Series C-1, 16-16/1636 Series B-1, 14-15 Series A-1, 14-15 Series A-2, 10-20 Series B-4, 10-20 Series A-2, 10-20 Series A-3, 16-15 Series A-3, 16-15 Series A-4, 25-15 Series A-3, 25-15 Series A-4, 40-15 Series A-5, 40-15 Series A-4, 18-04 Series B-3, 18-04 Series A-3, HD 150, HD 200, HD 250.
